Hey guys.
I have just recently made it to the Underdark, and have gone into the Beholder Caves. Just after facing and killing the elder orb, I noticed that my main character's strength rating was in the red at 17, from 18/74. He does not have any debuff type spells on him, nor has he had any sort of level loss. I tried to cast restoration on him to no effect. I have also tried equipping gauntlets of ogre power, and for some reason his str stays at 17 and doesnt go to 18/00. Any ideas? I cant seem to work it out.

One possibility:
Remember the demon guarding a bridge that asks you to sacrifice something in a dream sequence back in spellhold? What did you sacrifice? You might have had chosen strength... Don't worry, though. You'll find a very nice item in the Kuo-Toa Tunnels nearby to compensate. |

If its in red, it means it could be temporary.
Look on your character sheet, and if it says "Ability Score Drained", then you just have to wait a few minutes before your strength is back at 18/74. |

Check your shield. You might be wearing the Shield of Balduran which reflects beholder's rays with a strength penalty of -1.

Mental harmony dispels the darkness

My guess is the Shield of Balduran or any items (check their descriptions) which give penalties. If there isn't any of these, then rest 16 or 24 hours, your Strength should return to normal. If it doesn't return to normal, then it is a permanent effect (e.g. you can suffer such loss in Watcher's Keep, while manipulating with Carston's Machine). Although permanent ability losses aren't indicated by red color.
