There aren't that many legal characters that are quite unjustifiable rpg-wise, but after thinking about a game of a dwarven assassin I thought about taking a different turn, and this is what I came up with. Now if anybody else has had similar thoughts about underrepresented game characters it might be fun to share.
Daring the wrath of true-blooded rpg-players I've started a solo game from bg as a female dwarven single-class thief and continuing it to SoA and eventually to ToB making her as a ...Dramatic music!... A Shwashbuckler! How did it go with shwashbucklers? Epitomes of grace? Not this bearded lady! Dwarves suffering from hydrofobia? Yarr mateys, this lass has spent more time sailing the seas by herself than any dwarf she's ever encountered, even making (or soon to be making) the long voyage that might have been the doom of Balduran himself, and she will best that sea, whatever dangers will lie ahead! And what about Dwarves wielding axes, hammers and the like? She won't have any of them! Give her a cutlass and she'll cleave through any landlubber waiting to be hung to dry! Already ate Drizzt fer brekkie after knocking Immy cold with a slingbullet an' snatching a pretty blade from an ugly knobgoblin. She's mean! She's...well not so lean...but she's a hairy breed allright! And I just had to let her out of her gage 'cause there'll be no stopping her! |

Well thanks!
I thought that this might be the farthest from a race's true calling that you might get. Would be kinda nifty if the game would allow dwarven wizards, bards or even monks. Maybe just as well that it doesn't, since the novelty of it wore out pretty soon in IWD2. Still, it kind of bugs me that dwarves and halflings are so restricted in what they can choose for an adventuring profession, but I guess that goes with the way most dwarves and halflings live their lives and how their societies are constructed. Oh well.

Dwarven pirate lass doesn't sound too far-fetched; go with it.
"Ah, I return home to Brynnlaw." EDIT: Oh, here's a stupid idea. Gnomish F/C. ![]() [ November 02, 2005, 02:21: Message edited by: Felinoid ] |

Ooo...This is a good offbeat way to show a Dwarves Penchant for Combat. A Non Fighter Combat prowess kit.
If you truely want to get away from the Dwarves as what they are. The Assassin is probably the farthest. But As far as RP in the Second edition universe all the sneaking and stuff didn't sit well with the majority of them. I really like this. ~snickers~ Dual wielding a good Scimitar or the like people might be more scared from an RP perspective that the Dwarf has gone into some berserk epileptic fit in battle with all the thrashing. I just love that mental image. As you said though. Halflings and Dwarves are hard to play against what they are with the very limiting choices. The Elves got it easy with things like Elven Wizard Slayer(I sometimes call this elf slayer to a friend of mine) |

Being the romantic I am, I imagined the shwashbuckler something of a bard without the artistic side. A jack-of-all-trades as far as it goes with dwarves without getting anywhere near clerical.
As thieves main contribution to killing critters is backstabbing, and the assassin being best at this, I thought that as far as damage-doing goes a dwarf would choose the profession which could deal more of it. But then again, backstabbing isn't combat and usually the use of poisons needs at least some knowledge of poisonous plants and animals, and a dwarf taking an interest in growing things might be a little further away fetched than a dwarf taking an interest in piratism. Might give a shot at that elf slayer EDIT: oh yeah! and that gnome f/c! I bet that very few have played that!

Actually. Contrary to Popular belief. If you invested in things like the Race book for the Dwarves. The Dwarves put a lot into understanding plants and things. That Strong Dwarven Ale. Some of that was made from Mushrooms. A few dwarves drank a nasty poisonous concoction appropriately called 'RotGut'.
The Difference being that their main area of study was primarily subteranean. They would even cultivate them for food sources and such. Masters of their undermount environment in much the same way as Elves have always been seen as masters of their Forest Homes. Some plants and animals were even justification for using their poisonous properties. Others were used as markers. They even had a kit that was almost like the underground ranger. A Dwarven Assassin is very far off the beaten path for a Dwarf but not totally unjustifiable. Dwarves and Elves tended to be my favorite races so once upon a time I had a lot of stuff for them. I wish I hadn't gotten it stolen so I could give you more details. Still though. Dwarven Swashbuckler. Dwarven Assassin. The difference is so small and they are both such excellent creative justifications for something off a beaten path. I really think it's excellent. |
