Suppose, for instance, I have a mage character who is good-aligned, but I want him to have a ferret as a familiar. Is there any way to use ShadowKeeper to give yourself a different familiar than your alignment would mandate?

Balance, in all things

Yes, I believe so. Familiars are items, after all (when in your inventory). Just locate the correct familiar and assign him to an invevtory slot. I've never tested this, so have no idea whether it will work, though.
Another solution would be to change your alignment, cast FF, and then change it back. The original familiar would then remain. |

When I tried to just assign a Familiar to an inventroy slot using SK, I got the familiar, but none of the benefits and could not even release the familiar to operate on its own.
Therefore, I would recommend that you use The Magpie's other suggestion and SK your alignment to the appropriate one, cast FF, then SK your alignment to the one desired. No problems doing it that way. |

Why yes, I wanted a cat familiar, added it via SK, but whenever I release it it just dissapears forever and neither can I summon a new one.
So, if I change my alignment to CN (I guess it was cat's alignment?), cast the spell, then rechange my alignment to Neutral Good, will I have a cute black cat? But , I already have a familiar. How can I just dump him? I know it can be gone when you receive items (it is often dropped) or I can even delete it via SK, but then I can not summon a new one as I already have the bonus of the old familiar and game thinks I already have one. What can I do to make the game 'forget' I had alrady summoned one familiar? Any answers will be welcome, this weekend I am going to my home again, and will also visit beloved Fearun!

There are serious bugs if you have a familiar that doesn't match your alignment. I had a CN F/M/T with a cat familiar who 'failed' the Hell Trials and became NE. Next time I released him, when I put him back in my pack he became a rabbit (TN). Confused at the transformation, I re-released the rabbit, and nothing came out. But it still thought I had a familiar.
Since I had been wanting to get a new one of my new alignment anyway, I settled on CLUAing it in as a creature. I then talked to the CLUAed creature as normal and put it in my pack. I finished all of ToB with no further problems. So if you want a different familiar, you'll have to change your alignment permanently and then cast the spell. (Or you could do it like I did if you just want to change familiars, but you'll still need to permanently change your alignment in order to keep the new one.) |
