I think that wizrad is stronger because he or she can choose which spells he can cast at the time, and can fast switch spells to set the one he or she needs at the moment. Sorcerer can casyt much more spells per day but his or her spell list is very limited as for me.

I don't agree.

While the Wizard can memorise all he wants, and thus prepare more specifically, the Sorcerer has less memorised, but a wider variety of spells available to him in battle.

If a wizard doesn't prepare a spell, he can't cast it in battle, might he unexpectedly need it. A sorcerer can.

The only thing the Wizard class is superior in in my opinion, is the high INT requirement, which allows you to have lots of points to spend on skills.

I think wizard really is the best. You can choose almost all of your spells (write magic)
And he definatly has a large variety of spells faragon. With a sorcerer, you don't have much control.

I have already discussed wizardx/sorcererx a lot with faragon. He says: Lots of low-level spells that way. I say: Lots of ready-to-use spells, and with some balancing you still got a lot of high-level spells. Figure it out for yourself Elan Morin Tedronai (nice name by the way)

I agree that a wiz x/sorc x is not practical. As to which is better, it would depend from player to player. As mentioned each class has its advantages and disadvantages. If the creators of IWD thought one was better, the other class would not have been used.

I must say I think the sorcerer is better. Having played through a few times now [including a solo sorcerer], I never found that my sorcerer lacked "knowing" a spell I really wished I knew. Shield, magic missile, mirror image, stoneskin, fireshield, fireball, haste, cloudkill, disintegrate, finger of death, horrid wilting, animate dead, wail of the banshee, you name it, I got it. The only spells I did not know are the crappy "other" spells like protection from Acid or Malavon's Rage. Just for curiousity, I am midway through the game with a solo drow wizard, and it is a lot harder than playing with the sorcerer.

Sorcerers have more firepower in combat, and can cast any spell they know at any time, so you don't have to guess what is coming up next before-hand.

I have tried many. many different magic users, throughout all the D&D games. But my current, IWD2 Elven Sorcerer with crossbow is EASILY the best magic user i've ever played.

Sorcerer of course! Wizard might be able to learn spells but quite often it's hard to find the scrolls for some spells to learn from. I have a sorcerer and a wizard in my party. My sorcerer cleans house and can stand up for himself in a one on one fight with most enemies (hell he once took out nearly 15 hell horrors without taking a hit), he's got over 150 kills (my tanks are just over 300 a piece) and my wizard has less than 50 and really is the one member that is almost in constand healing need if anything gets through my tank and raised dead defence.

Sorcerer all the way!

Well the answer is easy. It's both. Use a sorcerer as your party talker and specialize in enchantment. Hold Person, Dispel Magic, the mass-disabling spells. Take a few nukes for throwing in the odd blast. Use your wizard to nuke things, and just nuke things. Your sorcerer has the versitility needed to fill the role. The wizard dishes out more damage with almost exclusively damage spells memorized.

Alternately you could use a bard and wizard, but I'm partial to the sorcerer myself. If you twisted my arm and made me pick one or the other... I'd take the sorcerer.

Write this down:

Sorcerer

I'll provide a good reason (in addition to the ones above): you save time by not having to decide what spells to memorize before going to sleep. I don't know if I'll ever play a mage again (except for BG1, where I don't have a choice.) I'm glad they set bards up like this too.

A Sorcerer is much simpler than a Wizard, since he doesn't have to memorize spells. All you need to do is walk around casting dozens of fireballs at people. But if you play the Wizard well (and have the patience to switch to the spells that are the most effective against your current enemy) it can be far more effective.
It's just up to your playing style.

Mhmm, I just pick my spells so that I have a wide area of situations in which my sorcerer can help out. That way I'm always prepared for anything.
