In ToEE's newer rule system, choosing a specialist mage is a little different than most of us are used to. Instead of sacrificing a hard-coded opposition school in order to specialize, you are given the choice to select 2 spell schools to go without in exchange for specialization.
I have a few questions. The first two should be simple to answer, but the third is more subjective and based on your opinions. 1. What bonuses do you receive for specialization? Extra spells per level I assume, but is your preferred school now more potent (like a bonus to the DC or what)? 2. Can you cast spells from your school of opposition from scrolls? 3. What schools are the best to sacrifice, and why? The best to specialize in and why? |

Take specialization in Divination...Then you only have to sacrifice 1 spell school. The downside is, you can only use your bonus slots for divination spells...

Follow-up[ question: Why take a Sorcerer? Doesn't seem all that useful as regular Wizards get to PICK spells at level up anyway...

Sorcerers get to cast more often, but you have to take care in picking your spells, because you can't just add spells to your repertoire. Although I'm sure many would disagree, I don't think sorcerers are all that great.
Give me a wizard or specialist anytime. Plus, with the additon of the scribe scrolls feat for free, the wizard is a no brainer! |

Mmm... hot tea!

Which school to pick? Two stand out as good to me:
- Conjuration because there's a decent spell at each level. - Evocation because there's nothing like MM and Fireball. Even though the level 2 bonus spell is typically wasted. I guess you could Heighten a MM into this slot, but I don't think it's worth a feat. Which schools to choose as opposite school? - Necromancy is the first and obvious choice to me. - I don't like Enchantment spells so that is my second choice. If you take two wizards (a good idea) then you can "deselect" Necro/Enchant on one and Necro/Abjuration on the other. Abjuration has Stoneskin which IMO is a must have spell, but you only need to have it on one of your characters since it can be cast on others. |
