This was one of my favourite Bollywood movies ever, but I nearly fell off my chair when I discovered that this has an 'R' rating in the US 'for violence' This is a '12' in the UK.

If anyone has not seen this movie, I highly recommend it, its much better than Braveheart and Troy combined.

The movie is about Asoka the Great, who was ruler of the Mauryan empire from 273 BC to 232 BC. He reigned over most of South Asia. He was a fearless ruler, that later convered to Buddism.

I don't know much about Indian history, but this movie had lots of cool action scenes (check our Asoka's sword/whip), but has lots of singing and dancing, while not being 'my thing', I can hardly criticise, as this is a Bollywood movie after all!

Judging by your posts Enagonios, you would probably like the women in this movie, especially Kaurwaki, who is played by Kareena Kapoor

I am not a Bollywood fan but I did see this movie and was impressed. Maybe because this is the first one of this type I saw. I almost turned it off during the 'silly' dancing scenes, but it turns out there were only 2 of them. I never noticed the rating, but R does sound too strong. The fight scenes were not that gory. Maybe because they included women fighters?

If you liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at all, you might like 'The Bride With White Hair' and the sequel. It is kinda like the love story part of Asoka. I think BWWH is much better than CTHD. PS: She is a hotie also.

I have heard of BWTWH, and it has some decent ratings so I will definately check that one out.

One of the things that I liked most about Asoka, were the exotic weapons during the battle scenes, but yes the dancing scenes were silly.

Their technique of taking care of small to middle fighting scence (take care: frames, fighting sequence, camera angle etc, small to middle: few mens to 2 teams of men) are on par with 70's ~ early 80's Hong Kong movies.

If you have dvd, good for you, you can skip the singing. But anyway, dancing and singing is part of Bollywood, you cannot get away with it, not matter how silly you think it is, heck, their audience like it, they don't care about you.

Shakur Khan's (or the director's) initial pick for Kurwaki was the singing girl in the tarven in the movie, but the director (or shakur khan) wanted to work with someone else, thus Kareena. Well, no matter, she is hot.

Asoka is precious for Bollywood because it is one of the ultra very rare (with turbo) big budget bollywood movie. They may make more movies than Hollywood each year, and these movies, combined, may have more audiences than Hollywood each year, but they are all small budget, modern background, few weeks to months projects, not really carefully planned. Once in a while, you get Asoka. That's why you should watch it. Afterall, this movie is suppose to have all the best movie talent of all aspects that India has to offer.

...... and after a year i have watch it, now taking about it, kurwaki's opening song still comes to my mind ..... "ja ja jari jari, jari parvan" something like that.... the horror
