Hey everyone! I just purchased a domain name for a business I've been putting together. Now that I've got the name I want, I was thinking about setting up a webpage and contact e-mail for the site...and I have some questions.
Most of you seem to have a much better sense of how to build webpages and such, so I thought I'd ask for some advice. How much does it cost for a simple one page website for a year? How hard is it to set up? Can someone that's never done it before set one up? What about setting up e-mail accounts for the domain name? And finally...Anyone want to help me set it up? |

I can only give you an example how I got my website up and running (check "Home" tab if you want to see it).
1) Server-space. If it is just one page or so without any content, like PDF documents, hefty images, software, etc; even two megs should be enough. 2) Upload/Download tool. My first server uses a tool named "WinSCP2", which is freeware, but my other server requires a FTP-transfer clien (I use CuteFTP). These tools are used to transfer ready webpages from your computer to the server-space. 3) Website creation. Macromedia Dreamweaver is pretty easy tool to make them, especially if you don't want to learn the coding side, but basically Windows notepad is enough. (Input code and simply save as HTML-file.) 4) If the server is using Unix, there should be a folder named "Public_HTML" under your root-directory, so everything you place there will be public. You just have to make that domain point towards these sites. Try contacting the company from where you bought it, but I cannot say this for sure as I have set this up by visiting the sysop of my uni. The costs depend of the host. I'll just assume it goes like this: + Your annual domain costs (~50€/12) + Your monthly hosting costs (~30€ minimum, if you don't find it for free). + Monthly bandwidth costs (not a problem if it is just a single page without content). == ~35€ per month (420€ per year), and this would be enough for a bigger site too. In my case, my site doesn't have any expenses. My uni has unlimited bandwidth, as well as my other server, and they both offer me ~50 megs of free space without ads. ![]() [ August 31, 2004, 15:05: Message edited by: Wirhe ] |

The cost depends on the webspace provider you choose. They will also set up your e-mail addresses for the domain, subdomains if you want any and all that stuff. The price to pay will depend on how much space you need on the server and how much bandwidth you use. For a small site disk space and bandwidth use will be minimal unless you get hordes of visitors. So, I guess the bill shouldn't be very high. In fact, if you don't need fancy features, a free or "affordable" hosting would suffice so long as they would host your domain name as well.
Depending on your host, you'll get FTP access to your server space and/or some kind of upload panel. So far as making the actual site goes, you can try and code it the proper way or use one of those crappy editors like FrontPage or DreamWeaver. Or you can send me the content, tell me how you want it to look and I'll do it for you. The latter is the recommended option

Also, please keep the web-design advice flowing. My new church's site needs serious help. |

@Sir Bel: Can do design as well. I've always enjoyed that part more than the coding
Drop me a line when you more or less know what you want to have.@Mat: No worries, send your wish list my way as well. After that exam on September the 7th I'm going to have more time. |

Math - It's just going to be a webpage advertising my legal services. Nothing big, maybe a picture of me, a logo, practice areas, and contact information.

Bel - I don't know about you, but I get web space along with my internet access from my cable internet provider. Wouldn't that be sufficient for what you have in mind? No real sense in purchasing a domain for what you have in mind (but I guess it's too late for that
).

Yes, the domain has been purchased. Plus, I'm hoping that one day it will need more space. Plus I've been using a comcast.net address for web space, but I wanted a cooler, more identifiable website name.

Just contact me via PM or e-mail and I'll host and set up the whole thing for you when you need it. It's the least I can do in return for all you've done for SP.
