Given the rather strong opinions often expressed on AoDA these days, I thought it might be nice to wish our Muslim SPer friends a happy Eid.

@Faraaz- well, I suppose it should have gone into Sorcerous Sundries, but as it seemed to me that so many of the discussions in AoDA lately had to do with recent events in Iraq, Palestine, the Netherlands, etc., it might be good to reflect on some of the positive aspects of Islam.

I had read, for example, that a number of Dutch mosques were publicizing their Eid festivities to non-Muslims this year as an attempt to restore some kind of dialogue...

@Abomination: Its the biggest festival for Muslims. Kinda like Christmas for Christians (only importance wise though...the reasons are totally different)

Its when you celebrate the end of the fasting period of Ramadan.

To clarify for people unfamiliar with Muslim customs, Eid Al-Fitr (the full name) roughly translates into "The Festival of Breaking Fast". It is a celebration marking the end of the month of Ramadan, where Muslims fast for 30 days from sunrise to sunset. The celebration is typically three days long with the first day being initiated with a special group prayer around an hour after dawn. Afterward, families tend to celebrate Eid in their own way. Some have large gatherings while others feel more comfortable celebrating with their own family.

I had a blast this Eid. In my house, our Eid celebration is essentially a fusion between western and Arabic practices(my father was raised in the US). After prayer, we spent the day exchanging gifts and having sports competitions between mine and my uncle's family(swiming, running, baseball, [American] Football). Then there's the standard celebratory fare of turkey, mashed potatos, stuffing etc. to gorge on. In all, Eid was great this year and, unfortunately, it will be the last one I'll be able to spend with my family for a while since I'm going off to University in the Fall.

Eid was observed on the 13th or 14th (depending on location), so no, your well-wishes aren't belated

Jack's doing Eid activities at school which is a bit weird since there isn't a single muslim kid in his entire nursery...
