What do you think? Is it realistic? Would nVidia gain anything from having its own CPU? Would computer owners benefit from having the option to buy such a processor? Discuss.

Well, GPU are processors of a different kind but processors nontheless, so I guess it would make sense that nVidia try their luck at selling CPUs. *shrug* Just don't count on me to get one. Intel and nVidia are two companies I have a strong dislike for.

Oh, it's taken from The Inquirer, one of the most trusted news sources on the planet... Btw, it is NVIDIA

But as for a CPU, no, I do not see it happening, not yet at least.

Well...it's a proven fact that GPUs in general do a lot more calculations per sq mm than CPUs do. If nVidia has the fabs, the money, and the engineers to make their own line of CPUs, I don't see why they shouldn't. Hell, they've got the GPU and Chipset bases covered, all the need is a good CPU lineup, and they'd be the tripple threat that could give AMD/ATI and Intel a run for their money...at least in the enthusiest/gammer market. I know a lof of hardcore AMD fans that hate AMD just for buying ATI...they'd probably buy a nVidia configuration.

The fact that nVidia would consider making their own CPU (instead of merge like ATI did) just goes to show that they still hate Intel from their past dealings.

AMD/ATI are working on a combined CPU and GPU called Fusion. If it works out, I'm sure nVidia will follow.

Only the special purpose calculations necessary for graphics (and maybe physics based on the talk these days) processing. GPUs are designed for graphics calculations; a general purpose CPU is much different and different tradeoffs are made.

I suppose more players in the processor industry can only be a good thing. More competition should result in better products and lower prices. nVidia probably have the cash to do it too given the success of their previous and current line up of gpu's.
