DailyTech speculates that editor Jeff Gerstmann has been fired by GameSpot for a negative review of a game which was advertised at the same site. Here's an excerpt from the bitter reflection:

While the text-based review for Kane & Lynch: Dead Men certainly doesn't paint a sparkling picture of the game, it makes it seem like a AAA title compared to the brutally scathing video review. When many of the same written words are spoken, the context and inflection of "Kane & Lynch is an ugly, ugly game" and "if you have a chance to see it, take a look - but it's probably not worth the purchase" takes it down to a whole new (lower) level of garbage.

In a bit of prophetic cartooning, Penny Arcade posted a comic outside of their usual schedule (language may offend some) up last night, showing poor Mr. Gerstmann being asked if he understands the connection between the torrent of Kane & Lynch advertisements and the box of his possessions outside his locked office.

Read the rest at DailyTech. Thanks, Splunge.

It was bound to happen, sooner or later. Online review sites depend far too much on advertisement - it is practically their sole source of revenue. It was only a matter of time before an editor slammed an advertised game and got fired as a result.

So much for my naïve belief that online game sites are able to withstand pressure from game manufacturers. (I'm not actually sure why I believed that in the first place.)

    Oh, and you're welcome. :)

I was wondering what the latest Panny-Arcade was about.

This is why I ignore 'official' reviews and go by player reviews. If a game is advertised on the site of course there will be pressure to give it a good review. If a game is not advertised it may receive a lukewarm or negative review which may or may not be fair. Reviewers are only human after all.

Kudos to him for saying what he really thinks - It sucks that people can't nowadays. If a reviewer isn't passionate about games, and doesn't give an honest unbiased opinion, they shouldn't be a reviewer.
