I have variously read that different stores offer you different prices for all your loot, and that the store in the shark town gives the most. A couple quests:

    1. How much more do you get for stuff in shark town versus places available before you go to spellhold (e.g. adventurers mart)

    2. Is there any specific pre-spellhold places that gets you the most gold in comparison to other pre-sellhold places

    thanks

Keep in mind that all stores do not buy all items. Stores generally buy items for 30% of their listed value (prior to charisma and rep bonuses). The best places to sell items are, in order:

    1. (80%) Carras, Amkethran Smugglers (special)

    2. (60%) Karthis al-Hezzar (ToB river area)
    Bartender, Tankard Tree (Saradush Tavern)

    3. (55%) Chyil, Waukeen's Wares (Amketheran)
    Ribald, Adventurers' Mart (special store)
Sister Farielle, Waukeen's Wares (Saradush Waukeen temple)

    4. (50%) Priestess of Sekolah, Temple of Sekolah

The rest are more or less average (~30%). Both Baldurdash and BG2 Fixpack adjust the Sekolah priestess from her ridiculously good buy prices (80%) as she would actually buy items for more than she would sell them (with good rep and charisma). She still gives very good prices, but she can no longer be exploited for infinite gold.

Well, as indicated above, he's a Amkethran Smuggler, so you find him in Amkethran! :)

I think, perhaps, you need to have the encounter with Galean in Amkethran first (could be wrong about that). Carras is in a cave, and IIRC, you have to save him from the monks to get a single opportunity to browse his wares. He has a couple special items for sale too.

also, sell item prices depend on quantity already in stock

if you try to sell a full plate to someone who already has five in stock don't expect to get that much for it ... it's best to collect items of the same type then sell them in large packs, since the first sell price affects them all

Last time I went to the shark city, I remember selling Rogue Stones and buying them, then reselling and making a hefty profit. I always seem to get quite a bit more than 50% from them even before I started installing mods. No mods that I have adjust sell/buy prices regardless.

Don't forget you get more favorable deals at stores for high reputation and charisma. If you're still getting the exploit with BD and/or Fixpack, there's some more adjustin' needed. :)

I believe I had 20 rep and 18 CHA (human influence ring), but no BaldurDash or Fixpack.

Regardless, having a high rep and CHA is really easy, and with the same rep/CHA have never gotten a better deal, except maybe in BG1Tutu from the Grey Clan mod.

Never quite understood all the money hoarders. Sure, from the start there could be some problems, but you soon have enought money not to know where to go with it. If you aren't playing mods like Improved Anvil and Items upgrade there is no simply no way you could run out of money. I tried. I bought everything that was needed and some redundant stuff, you know, just in case, and then sell the loot from adventuring... and I had enought money. Again.

Your only problem is if you are wild mage and you get wild surge that destroys all the money, or if you draw Ruin from Deck of many things. And even then you can fix things quickly.

Also worth mentioning is the Shadow Thief fence above Gaelen. I'm not sure his buying prices are any better than other stores, but his selling and identify prices are.
