Default Problem identifying something...

So I've found this unidentified dagger and I can't seem to identify it no matter what I try. I tried a couple shopkeepers in Kuldahar but it wouldn't let me choose the dagger in their Identify menu. I bought a couple of Identify scrolls but when I right click the dagger, the scroll option is grayed out. What's wrong?
Also, I have a Ranger character, is it possible for him to learn/memorize spells?

Rangers can learn divine spells, starting from level 8, wisdom is their casting attribute.

Identify is an arcane scroll, (arcane spell). I think it takes a mage or a bard to use it. Rangers shouldn't be able to do that, they learn divine spells.

Do you have some character with mage or bard levels?

If the scroll is in the inventory of a mage when you use it, then I don't know what's wrong.
(Btw, you probably know this but have your mage learn identify from the scroll as a spell. That way you don't have to buy scrolls or use the shopkeepers for identifying items.)

I'm not sure what's up with the shopkeepers.

Err... for that party, all I can remember for identifying are the shopkeepers. Sorry. ( Maybe someone else here knows more, though.)

If I were you, I would expand the party a bit.

Your best bet is to add another character, a spell caster, single or dual class. Mage or bard, your pick.

You could add a thief/mage, for example, to cover the lack of rogue skills in your party (for traps, locks etc.)

If you don't mind starting over, you could redesign your characters to be dual or multi class, for example (if you want to keep a two person party).

Personally, I play with full party of six, but some people prefer four or less characters (more leveling that way). A matter of taste.

I might just add another character. But wouldn't playing with so many characters makes the game easier? Or maybe the game as some kind of adjustment system?

Well, I'm no expert, but if I understand correctly, when you have more characters, the game levels them up at a slower rate (experience gets divided or something?) So technically, at the same point in the game you have a larger, low level party, or a smaller but higher level party. Your pick.

Besides, you can always adjust the difficulty at the Options/Gameplay screen, if I remember correctly.

Yes, this makes sense. Anyways I'll just add a mage. Too bad he'll be a level one though...

Different shopkeepers will identify different items. For weapons you need to go to Conlan (the smithy).

Experience is divided equally among characters. So a two-member party will level faster than a six-member party. Still, a six-member party will hit ~17th level by the end of the game (with HoW). Play with the party members you like, adjust the difficulty to make the game as tough as you want.

If you're primarily interested in someone to identify stuff, you may want to choose a bard -- they're great in this game. At high levels their song will greatly add to attacks and will regenerate (heal) your party. They cast some spells, but not the most powerful spells, and can use bows. They become decent fighters with level 40 rules and elven chainmail.
