[IMG]While not exactly clear whether it will be a brand new game or an expansion to Fallout 3 due to different reports, it has been revealed that Obsidian will be working on Fallout: New Vegas which is scheduled for release next year. The significance of this of course is the fact that many of the developers who created the original games are currently working at Obsidian. For fans of the Fallout universe, this is a pretty big deal. It means the original creators of the series will likely have some sort of role in building this new Fallout title.

At a Bethesda press event in London today, our very own Jem Alexander learned of a brand new addition to the Fallout universe. Fallout: New Vegas will be available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 next year, courtesy of Alpha Protocol developer Obsidian Entertainment.

No other details have been revealed yet, but we're certain Jem will lockpick and hack his way to as much information as he can. We'll feed him to the mutants if he doesn't.

Update: The title is "just Fallout: New Vegas. No number. It's not a sequel." For those worried this non-numbered expansion would be a party game, fret not. It's "definitely an RPG," according to Bethesda VP Pete Hines. Obsidian Entertainment was founded by Fergus Urquhart who, along with a few other Obsidian guys, worked on the original Fallout. The team was approached by Bethesda and "jumped at the chance" to work on this new title.

    ---

Fallout New Vegas was announced moments ago during a Bethesda press conference in London.

The new game was revealed by Bethesda's Pete Hines who said that the publisher is working with Obsidian Entertainment on the title.

It will be coming out next year for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

"It is not a sequel to Fallout 3," Hines said. "It's simply another Fallout game in that universe."

It will be the same sort of role-playing game experience seen in Fallout 3, he said. The game's official reveal, with more details and a look at the game down the line.

Hines added that this title will have no impact on what Todd Howard and his team are working on.

Obsidian Entertainment is the development studio that rose from the ashes of Black Isle Studios, responsible for developing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Neverwinter Nights, Alpha Protocol, and Sega's Aliens: Crucible RPG, which is currently on indefinite hold.

This certainly is interesting. We might actually get a CRPG and not a bad shooter-adventure game.

Also, the release is planned for Q4/2010, so it is still many moons away.

Still, as a huge fan of the first two games... I can honestly say that I am eagerly awaiting this game now that it has been announced. I can't wait to see what the original designers manage to do with the Fallout 3 engine, it should definitely be different from Bethesda.
