Earlier, the Los Angeles Times said that the singer had been rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital by fire department paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived at the singer's home.

The newspaper said paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene before taking him to the UCLA Medical Center hospital.

Jackson had been due to start a series of comeback concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010. The singer, whose hits include "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months.

The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within hours of going on sale in March.

Jackson started out as a child star in the band "The Jackson 5" more than 40 years ago.

He has lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation.

There have been concerns about Jackson's health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.

As all of the choppers were heading in to UCLA (which I can see from my office) and I realized I needed to get the heck out of there before serious traffic set in, I mentioned to a colleague: And all across the land, 8 year old boys breathe a sigh of relief.

Yes, he was talented, but his strangeness overshadowed it by a factor of 10.

He was quite talented, and I believe he was also a very troubled man. I feel pity for him and the life he ended up living - -I wonder if he had had a normal childhood could he have had a more emotionally fulfilling life. I've always thought that he was a textbook example of how even a very rich man could be unhappy. I hope, in all literalness, that he is now able to Rest In Peace. He's finally free from all the people who hounded his every move.

Sorry T2, but not really. The parents were the ones sending them there knowing what the rumors were (perhaps hoping for settlements). The second part of my comment to my colleague was: And scummy parents of those 8 year olds were damning their missed opportunities.

What a tragedy. I understand that Michael has been a little odd this last decade or so but there was a time when he was a great performer; one of the best! He'll be missed.

Unfortunately, that's the way most great performers go. They're increadible for a while, then they start to go off one way or another. Jackson just went a little more off, and in a stranger direction, than most.

I saw some announcements yesterday evening, but the more reputable news sites just said he was hospitalized... wow. He was maybe the greatest entertainer in the last 25 years, and a truly extraordinary man. It was a pity what happened to him - whether due to his own mistakes or just paparazzi BS - and I was really looking forward to seeing him make a comeback in his career.

May he rest in peace.

I was totally in love with him when I was younger! The guy had some problems but he was still an amazing performer. Totally gutted he's gone.

I wonder if this will go the same way as Elvis though...people saying that he isn't dead, he's been kidnapped by aliens/go back to his home planet/works in a burger bar etc etc

Anyway, love him or hate him, he was a massively influence in the music world and a wonderful performer

I grew up with him. Its sad, truly. And I do agree, he was a troubled man and perhaps... just perhaps... it was for the best. At least now, he will live on forever in the annals of history along with other greats such as Elvis or Sinatra.

And I also agree with DMC, that despicable parents were pretty much gunning for multi million dollar settlements.

No. It was a 20 million dollar out of court settlement and an acquittal in the second case.

I don't think he ever conciously did anything to any child. he guy had some kind of mental problems and had never grown up. I doubt very much he had the capacity to knowingly molest anyone
