Impossible Encounter

Well...

today me and my bro were walking through the dungeon underneath the Unseeing Eye... when we happened upon 3 Beholders and 2 Gauths.

Me and my bro lept out of our seats in sheer terror and could not believe our eyes. They preceded to destroy our party!

But this encounter is only meant to be 1 Gauth??? What is going on here? i am confused. Has anyone else had this?

But we were unable to complete the quest to get the rod... and had to destroy the Unseeing Eye without it and missed out on lots of experience.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH... Beholders!

How do you know it was only meant to be 1 gauth? The Unseeing Eye doesn't appear until you've put the rift device together.

i SED in the dungeon BELOW the Unseeing Eye... u know... the one Gaal sends u too...

over the other side of the bridge where u get asked questions! there is usually only one gauth there...

yet we get attacked by 3 beholders and 2 gauths... answer me that!

and.... u can get the Unseeing Eye to come out by killing his minions in the rooms and the guards.

It may have something to do with your level. When I was there, there were 2 Beholders, 3 Gauths and several Shadows to contend with. I happened to do the Unseeing Eye pretty late because I didn't go to the Temple District until many other quests were done.

I can imagine it now:
Grrroowwwll, aaargh, slurp, slurp ***BUMP*** (DAMN THAT WALL!), aagagaga, ooo ***BUMP*** (F****ING LOW CEILING!), AAAooouuuu, eekekee ***BOING*** (DAMN DOORKNOB, GOOD THING I'M BLIND ALREADY!), groooowlll, aaaaeeiieeee ***SPLAT*** (WHO PUT THE DAMN STATUE THERE?!) etc.

Being a blind, slimy, floating ball can be a pain sometimes.

I got what Blackthorne got. 2 Beholders, 3 Gauth's and several shadows. It probably does depend on the level of your character.

And Tal....sometimes you worry me a bit.

I was level 11 when I went and did that and I got 3 beholders and 4 gaauths in all. So I think the level story is a bit dodgy.

Doesn't anybody use the Shield of Balduran or the Cloak of Mirroring??

I sent Imoen in to clear out the whole damned level!

It's no fun that way.
Try using a stealth character to pinpoint their location then casting Chaos out of their view, followed by Greater Malison, and 3 or 4 cloudkills. I think that would satisfy even the uptight 'roleplayers' on this board.
Of course, fireballs and chainlightings into the whole damn crowd work well too, especially if you've Webbed them.

we hadn't got that far. and we have no magic users either. Bummer.

Nevamind

btw we are playtesting a nice uasble Drizzt Party (based on true XP and stuff) and a nice Guenwhyvar. Maybe this is one reason we got them. But most of the party is NOT very high level except for Drizzt and Bruenor. and even these great and mighty people couldn't stand up to an assault like that.

You get the Shield of Balduran from Diedrie, that bonus shopkeeper in the Adventure Mart.

I hasted a fire elemental who cleared the entire level singlehandedly.
