I like how the guys in the picture are just watching him sip the beer, as if the idea of the US president drinking a beer is somehow worthy of an audience.

Obama's Irish roots may seem tenuous but no more than many of the lads who represented our football team, so what the hell. The absurdity of it just makes it all the more amusing.

I took a half day to see this but then had to hang around work trying to get payroll to actually talk to me

. By the time I got to the queue I couldn't even see the security barriers for the entrance it was so big so I headed home to watch it on tv. Complete waste of a half day due to the other person but it was that or explain to half the people in work why they didn't get paid this week

.

The crowd figures are all over the place. MSNBC are saying 30,000 in the article and 25,000 in the video. The Irish Times has 60,000 and the state broadcaster used a figure of 100,000 at one stage. The venue was very disappointing, it was chosen by the White House to give the best backdrop to US news clips and was never going to be able to cope with the expected crowd. From tv and speaking to my brother a massive segment of the crowd were teenagers, very few people in the 20-50 range with jobs seem to have been able to queue early enough. According to a guy on another forum I should have gone to the embassy. They spent ages searching people before leaving them into the cordon. Then a sergeant wanders over "ah shure he's here now, you might as well let them all in." I mean, we wouldn't want anybody with a bomb getting in before he arrives

. Speaking of the embassy, this might be my favourite moment of the trip.

The speech was very well delivered but as expected didn't say anything really. All in all the day was a nice bit of fluffy PR for both sides.

I met an American in Edinburgh named Gruczinski, who told me he was there to re-discover his Scottish roots. Nice lad. And he really liked his Guinness, never mind that being Irish.

Yeah, I got a chuckle out of that too. Evidently, Obama's great-grandfather (on his mother's side obviously) was an Irish immigrant. Isn't Guiness a British beer though?

No, Jaeger is German. It's just the Guinness and car bombs that are Irish. Though you can claim to be technically right about being British if you want. Guinness is now a part of the Diageo drinks group which is headquartered in Britain.

I would be suprised, but just a little. The part they gloss over is that the problems started right here, in the USA. Many European institutions bought derivatives based on AAA ratings that were not even close to AAA in reality. The Wall Street - big business - fraud wiped out a lot of wealth in a lot of places, not just in middle America. Still, the FOX "narrative" is that the "Euro Zone" is a hot bed of socialism and social programs that have doomed the entire Continent and we are next because of Obama's "socialist" agenda.

Actually, there isn't. A few years ago that would surprise me, but these days everyone is uptight and offended by "everything". Bunch of panzies. A joke is a joke in my book. As long as there isn't malicious intent. Humor is very mis-interpreted anymore.

What would be the ingrediients? I would connect the drink to Bush, not O'bama. Did Bush have a favorite drink? I thought I read somewhre that he doesn't drink anymore, but use to put away a few when he was young.

Actually, that's a Jager Bomb*. Jagermeister's german. In fact, a "German Car Bomb" is a bastardized version, dropping Jager into a Heineken.

A proper Irish Car Bomb is Guiness, and a shot that's 1 part irish cream (preferably Bailey's) and 1 part irish whiskey (preferably Jamison). I should know, it's my favorite drink.

3 of those and I'm destroyed.

* At least by the old definition. These days, a Jager Bomb is typically a Jager shot in a Red Bull. *shrug* Which sounds awful, personally.

What you described as a Irish Car-Bomb is what I remember it being when I was 21, but since the coming of Jager, it has evolved in a lot of places. I personally don't like Jager either. I always preferred Telly than Jamison as the Irish whiskey ingredient. Telly does more damage.

All due respect, I think they're doing it wrong where you live. Recipes sometimes vary by region, but in any decent Irish pub I've ever been to, it's as I described. Putting German liquor in an "Irish" drink would be sacrilege to a lot of folks I know, especially the full-blooded Irish buddies of mine who introduced me to it when I lived in Chicago.

But hey - drinkin's drinkin'. As my brother would say, it all makes piss.

Dutch beer, not German. I just finished one.

Unless the "German bomb" is sort of like from a Stuka. But I don't think the Dutch would appreciate the description, or the metaphor.

It seems a very sweet tasting beer, at least to me. I have to be in the mood for it - then they are pretty good. I get them ocassionally when they are on sale at Kroger, like they are this week.

For me it's either an Irish stout, Texas dirt beers (Lone Star, Shiner Bock), or Mexican dirt beers (Corona, Tecate, Dos XX), and the occasional craft beer, like Rogue. I'll always have a soft spot for Squatters, a Utah brewery (where I grew up).

I like most of those beers except for Lone Star. I also like Rolling Rock. But Mrs. Chandos, the real beer drinker of the house, doesn't like Corona, Tecate or Shiner. So it's usually Miller Lite, Icehouse or MGDs. I'm just not that picky about beer, only about my rum.
