Sorry for the dramatic headline, but how often do you get to say that?

The split here between caring for the poor and economic injustice
and the focus on bashing gays and contraceptives is in my mind symbolic of the good and bad sides of religion. You have in one institution two very different philosophies on what it is to be a Christian, and it takes every form from the West Boro Baptists to the Social Gospel Movement. Personally I side with the nuns hear as Christianity seriously needs their type of activism if they are going to reach people in this day and age, and I more or less find their values highly superior to the focus on demonizing others.

Yes, God forbid a Christian group doesn't talk non-stop about abortion or same-sex marriage, and instead talks about issues that actually appear quite often in the Bible and that matter to more people.

While I agree with much that has been said, since we're talking about nuns, this isn't all of Christianity, as I believe the position of "nun" is only among Roman Catholics. Especially considering that the order came from the Vatican, it is definitely only among Roman Catholics.

Perhaps, although these particular nuns certainly were, as they are against the decree coming from the Vatican. If they weren't Catholic, the Vatican wouldn't have any authority over them in the first place.

It's not all Christians, and certainly different groups have different definitions of what it means to be Christian. But this is one particular group of Christians we're talking about (granted a very large subset) - specifically Roman Catholics.

I didn't know you could do that - I thought that monasticism was for life, at least once you had taken all the vows.

It's supposed to be. However, in the area where I grew up, we had an instance where a nun and a priest fell in love with each other, left the church, and got married.

Now, it should be pointed out that they don't want you to do this, and the parting is never on good terms. But the rules of the church are not encoded in law (at least not unless you live in a theocracy), so if you really want out, they can't make you stay.

As for the types of Christianity, the only idea that seems to be present in all of them is belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ. I think that no matter what form of Christianity you practice, that is at the heart of your beliefs. But there's so many different sects. In rough order of size of the congregation:

1. Roman Catholics
2. Protestants (taking them as a whole - no one individual group of Protestants would be second)
3. Orthodox Christians (and they are distant 3rd)
4. Mormons
5. Baptists*
6. Nutjobs who start their own brand of Christianity

* For the record, I consider Southern Baptists to be Protestants, as their religion is derived from the Anglican faith, which is regarded as Protestant. However, I have met many Southern Baptists, and most of them do NOT consider themselves Protestants, as they do not tie their teaching directly to either Luther or Calvin. Under this strict definition, only Lutherans and Calvinists (and their recognized subset of Presbyterians) would really be Protestants. This would exclude the Church of England (Anglican Church) and thus, Baptists as well (and all the offshoots of the Church of England, e.g. Puritans and Methodists). It's all a little strange, because Methodists do consider themselves Evangelical Christians, just like Lutherans, Presbyterians, etc.

Well, clearly they aren't part of the Baptist Church just because it's in their name. They are squarely in category 6.
