I can't believe I never made this connection before, but it's been over 20 years since I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, as difficult is it is for me to believe that it's been that long.
Did anybody ever think of Marvin the Maniac-Depressed Robot from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when they met Xan in the Naskel mines? I just recently had a friend loan me a cd of the original radio broadcast and I've been listening to it in my car on the way to work. I just got to the Magrathea arc and Marvin's lines just made me think of Xan. BTW, I never got around to seeing the movie they made a few years back, I always intneded to watch it, but never did. If Marvin is different in the movie from the book, I wouldn't know. |

Brain the size of a planet....
What was awesome ... in the movie Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, on the Vogon planet in the waiting room is the old TV series Marvin. I laughed out loud when I saw him. |

Still, Xan was never so depressing he made another mage commit suicide. IIRC, Marvin makes another computer commit suicide by telling it his views on life at the end of the first book.
