I'm currently playing the game using a Barbarian. If my information is correct, barbarians are d12 which implements that they gain between 1 and 12 hitpoints per level.
So, after having finished the Mae'Var quest, my barbarian went from level 9 to level 10. Upon leveling up I noticed I only gained 3 hitpoints. I've made a habit of quick-saving before I level up, so I went back to the save and tried again. I actually tried about 10 times, but I always gained 3 hitpoints. WTF is up with that???? Am I getting something wrong here, or is this really bad luck? Sure hope it doesn't happen too often - what use is a barbarian without high hitpoints????

Are you playing Hard-Core rules?
Did you use Shadow Keeper to give your character the max HP he should have had if you leveled him up from level one? I did that, and that is what happened with my self-made NPC Assassin. Only +2 HP at level up from 10 to 11 with a dozen attempts. And he had 16 Con, which would lead me to belive if Con was 14 he would have got a zero HP boost!

I'm playing on CORE rules, and I've never used ShadowKeeper (this is only my fourth time through, maybe I'll get it after my tenth time
). When I reinstalled BGII, I haven't even set the Debug Mode to 1...And btw: my Barbarian has a Con of 19... |

Folks, read your rules. All classes stop gaining full HP's on levels under 2e rules at a certain point. In the case of a barbarian (and all fighter classes), this results in a simple addition of 3 HP's per level after 9th level. Thieves and clerics get 2 and mages get 1. (The level cut-off is different but not significant depending on class.) Further, the Constitution bonus does not apply to these HP's. Sorry, but that's the way the rules are implemented.

dmc is correct. The fixed hitpoints start at level 10 for all classes. There is no way to change that legally.

Ahh...
That would explain it then! Well in BG1 I never got a character past level 10 and this is my first stab at BG2. Live and Learn.
