I'm gonna play my first time through BG2 with the most powerful character possible : a dual-classes kensai/conjurer

when dualed at level 9, he can still reach max level as a mage. He'll have TONS of HP, a good AC, and a sensational THAC0, which will allow him to go in melee himself.
He'll have a THAC0 of 3 !!

level 9 figher base THAC0 = 12
Kensai special bonus = -3 (1 par 3 levels)
grand mastery = -3
magical sword (say +3) = -3

with a minimum damage of 9 per hit. And that's even without exceptional strength !

A quick mirror image followed by a swift fireball, and then the blade to finish them off. Mhuahahaha, he's gonna rock !

You may want to look into this before you get too excited.

2nd Edition Rules, which is what BG2 will be using, does not give you the ability to mix and match two classes that will and could be considered "kits".

Even though a Specialty Wizard is not considered a kit, its bonuses are reflected as one for dual and multi-class purposes.

The rules state that you can only have one kit per class, this to prevent people from creating a Fighter Bounty Hunter/Thief Assassin character which is two kits in one character. The same goes for all Specialty Wizards and Specialty Priests.

Now since your Fighter is using the Kensai Kit, you will not be permitted to dual class to a Specialty Wizard, a Specialty Cleric or another class using another kit. Your best option is a pure second class, Kensai/Wizard.

Sylvus is right, but I still like the idea. The fact that the kensai has an armor restriction makes him a natural for the "fighter" component of "fighter/mage."

No...don't cheat it. I mean that you could dual from a kensai to a non-specialized mage, and the two classes would work well together. Is there any reason that won't work?

My first character was a Kensai/Mage (they rock), but I don't like my mages engaging in melee (to me, there's something NOT SMART about standing in the middle of a bunch of goons to fire off Breach and then going up and attacking....) I like my spell-casters to have a full-time job, but if you like your character to be able to do everything themselves..... ^_^

I found fighter/mages to be best if you make them missile figthers. My mage in IWD is wreaking havoc with his crossbow of accuracy.
The best thing is of course the extra hitpoints and the fact he can wear a helmet.

I do not like the missile weapon restriction of the Kensai. There are enough items in the game that can reduce the AC of a mage, so I think that the Fighter/Specialist mage would be a better option.

how is your AC going be so good? I am playing the same character now, and get the crap kicked out of me because my AC is only 3 or 4. no armor sucks. at least mage can wear bracers.

Why dont you try a Swashbuckler/mage? IMHO they are fairly excellent also.

Im also using a kensai/mage for the first time. I have alredy beaten soa with a f/m/t though.
