    For the gauntlets you need to side with the king in the underwater city. He gives them to you as a reward. Of course you might be able to cheat them in as well....

    There are only a few +6 weapons in the game -- having those in hand for the final battle (and being able to use them) is always the best decision for upgrades.

    erm.... well i didn't realize how close i was to actually finishing SoA, i beat it a little prematurely for my tastes... there were many areas i did not explore, i didn't even realize there WAS an underwater city...

    i expected the boss to keep eluding me & "plot twists" and such nonsense, but i was actually quite close indeed...

    Anyway,
    the underwater city is reached if you decide to trust Saemon again after the pirate city. I desperately wanted to kill him at this point, but there's some good loot in the underwater city. You'll still get to the Underdark, too, it's just an extra little dungeon you can have.

    Heavy melee party will have trouble breacking those protections, unless you have an inquisitor. However, with smarter mages, inquistors will also have problems breaking the protections. The only in-combat way I know of is chaining 3 protection breaking spells with chain contingency. all other ways require that the prtection spells wear off(by extending your own protections (requiring magic) or hide somewhere). In one of the mods, the liches magically pull you back to prvent that (The tactics mod?)

    HL Mages can still take care of bosses albeit thru greater finesse. Methods include 1 mage chaining 3 lower resistances and then another mage hit them with 3 Horrid willting, or 1 mage keep on hitting the bos with breaches and another keep on summoning. The point is that the fighting capabilites of a mage comes from using others such as summons. If you want to get evil (like I always) project images will bypass the 1 celestial rule. (even in our own world, there are always expeptions or irregularites to the laws of physics!)
