Soloing a paladin through normal followed by HoF mode should in fact be easier than the barbarian. You get the holy avenger stat bonus twice, in HoF Targos you can get an amulet which allows paladins to cast heal once per day, protection from evil is very helpful when you summon the air elementals and with champion's strength, prayer and holy power you can do even more damage than the barbarian and increase it even further with smite evil.

Luck doesn't affect saving throw rolls (I guess that's because it should always be possible to fail a save), but helps when you roll for the damage taken from enemy spells. So magic missile always did 4 instead of 4-10 damage and the sunfires cast by Iyachtu Xvim did hardly any damage to her while the Lemures with 20 fire resistance were severly wounded for example.

The problem with the last chapter 4 battle is that you have to endure a long video sequence before starting it which doesn't make retrying much fun.
In my run the goal was surviving this battle which might be the hardest in HoF mode without cheating or using items which are gone after using, after achieving this goal there was no reason for me to spend time to watch the sequence and do this battle again.
Standing around for a few in game hours was just an action to avoid having to retry again which proved to be a waste of time without having an effect on the rest of the battle, I could have redone this battle without standing around, but I didn't want to spend extra time just for doing something I knew I could do.
Fighting the harpies one by one didn't feel like exploiting to me, not going forward more than necessary to avoid attracting more monsters is a standard tactic most players uses.
I could have used other tactics like attacking the elementals with a disruption weapon and reloading until being lucky or retreating into a corner with only harpies close enough to attack while shooting at the elementals and mages, but each reload means watching the sequence again and spending more time for a battle already won.
