Album Description If on a Winter's Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries - such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English "begging" song) Gabriel's Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting's own compositions - Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man - a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert's classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller - and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent Ségal (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they've created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound - an acoustic meditation on winter.
Album Description 2009 release from the multi-million selling singer, songwriter, musician and former leader of The Police. This release is dedicated to Sting's favorite season, Winter: a season which has inspired countless songwriters over the centuries and produced a wealth of music exploring all of its many guises. If On a Winter's Night... presents an arc of songs that conjures the season of spirits, resulting in a haunting, spiritual and reflective musical journey. ''The theme of winter is rich in inspiration and material,'' comments Sting; ''by filtering all of these disparate styles into one album, I hope we have created something refreshing and new.''

If I could give less than one star I would. March 12, 2010 James T. Kirk (Chattanooga, TN) If I could give less than one star I would. There is not one good track on this whole CD. Not even die hard Sting fans will find this listenable. This is what happens when a artist is rich and doesn't care what his audience thinks of his music anymore. Or he thinks they are so stupid they will buy a album anyway. I have also noticed that as artists age they really do loose their ability to make good music. Their creative juices have dried up. This whole CD is dried up. Really Bad!!!!! Save your money.
Sting C.D. March 2, 2010 G. Latimer (Bay Area, CA) What can I say about Sting, this is an excellent addition to my growing collection of his work, and I have been a collector for many years.

Was hoping for more... February 27, 2010 JBMA 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
We enjoy Sting and following him into different musical genres, but actually had to turn it off. My husband walked into the room and asked "what the hell *is* that?" as "Cold Song" (track 7) played. We enjoy early music, get that this isn't necessarily a "holiday" cd, are open-minded when it comes to various genres of music, but the strange arrangements and the artist's lack of vocal chops make this CD just plain weird and awkward. Wish we could get our $ back.
"Too Cold If On A Winter's Night",a new album by Sting. February 19, 2010 M. Mariba (south africa) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the worst album release by Sting by far!The last time he came close to this bad but certainly better was with another very poor release in 1996,"Mercury Falling".From now on I'll be very suspicious of any album by Sting with a suggestion of low temperatures. It seems his talent dives when temperature drops in both,"If On A Winter's Night" & "Mercury Falling".He is very talented and can certainly deliver better product.Hope no other temperature drop soon for Sting.
