Recently started a new game with this party:
    A human paladin (18/51,18,18,9,13,18) - L sword
    A human fighter (18/69,18,18,9,13,8) - G sword
    A dwarven fighter/cleric (18/52,17,19,7,18,6) - Hammer
    A half-elven mage (12,16,16,18,12,11) - Sling
    An elven fighter/thief (18/49,19,17,12,16,9) - CL bow
And an elven ranger (18/49,19,17,14,18,12) - CL bow
I'm playing on HoF mode, so my party is around level 4 and I'm curently in the orc cave.

I started playing with "party of little people" today. I use only small-sized characters, but that restricted too many classes, so I used Dalekeeper to take dwarven druid and halfling bard (I wanted to try druid and bard)

    Characters are:
Eberk Rumnaheim, male dwarven fighter, LN
    Shadowblade, male halfling fighter/thief, NE
Barundar Runehammer, male dwarven druid, N
    Amaryllis, female halfling cleric, NG
Roscoe Tosscobble, male halfling bard, CN
Halbrinn Whitehorn, male gnome illusionist CG

This party has been funny so far. I will put some screenshots and maybe story about it on my page.

I think I'll use insane difficulty this time. :p

By the way, is it possible to take screenshots in IWD while in dialog screen? For me that didn't work :( (I have Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster)

[IMG] I'm currently at Dorn's Deep with my first party of 6 (look into the "your first party thread" for reference).

At the same time I began a solo on insane difficulty with:

    RAMAZZAN, LG Halfling ( :) ) F/M/C
    15/18/18/18/18/6 :p

Sure, stats are slightly and race is heavily cheated - why? Because I cannot wait to get the helm of the trusted defender and be hasted all day without fatigue MUAHAHA. Well, whatever is fun, really...

I'm at the pass to Kuldahar now, and those Goblins on insane are pissing me off. I'm close to casting sanctuary and running right through them, thing is: They follow me, just don't attack! What's that all about?

An Halfling F/M/C!? Are you using dalekeeper? IIRC only Half-Elfs can be F/M/C.

He did say "race is heavily cheated".

Thats how sanctuary works in IWD Maertyn.
Why dont you just try Armour, Blur and Protection from Evil?
Your AC should come down to -3.
Also goblins fall to sleep very easily. Then hack .. or shoot in your case.

Throughout the game, I think that you can use your Sanctuary with the Turn Undead ability. And that's unbeatuble. For me the dwarven Fighter/Cleric was a total and uncompromising tank that had now stop from the begining till the end. Erm, well with the Paladin it was a little bit different and little more difficult.

Unstoppable az Juggernaut can be, that's for sure is the cleric. The fighter/cleric to specify... No fu*k-up with a singleclassed character. The multi is the bes for IWD 1...

I was searching these forums for good ideas and must say yours is really very interesting. Could you dig out the alignments you used and if there was an item which you`d loved to use but weren`t able to do so?? Ergo "perfect" alignment? (I know, not very rpg like, but whatsoever.)

Why did you chose HE for you bard? I`m thinking of the following party,

    Halfelf R/C
    Dwarven Fighter
    Human Fighter(2)/Druid(x)
    Halfling fighter/thief
    Gnome Fighter/Illusionist
    Elf bard

where my bard would go for bows and therfore is an elf.
Note that there`s no race twice!! Cool aye?
Flaws: No Pal. But I WANT a pure fighter. I think a halfling f/t is cool... hopefully I get +1 strength somewhere for backstabbing with 18/xx. I read thers a cool helmet for halflings, too, and a cool item for Fighter/mages ergo my gnome.

Did you use backstab with your gnome? with invisibility you didn`t put points in hide in shadows, did you?

    Thoughts, everyone??

    Tillix

    Sure. Lemme think...

Human Paladin: Lawful Good (big shocker, there)
    Half-Elf Ranger Cleric: Neutral Good
Elf Fighter: Either Lawful Neutral or Chaotic Good, can't remember for sure
    Human dual-class fighter 2/druid x: True Neutral
    Gnomish Illusionist/Thief: Chaotic Good
    Half-Elf Bard: True Neutral

If memory serves, there are a few great items available only to Lawful or Lawful Good characters. Naturally, they went to my Pally. You could have more than one LG character to spread the love. I think there's an item or two only for Chaotic, as well as Neutral characters, but again, I can't remember for sure. That's why I like to have a variety in my alignments. One thing I've never done is have any evil characters - I just don't dig on playing evil. So I've ended up selling the evil-only items, which usually fetch a huge sum. But I remember them not being all that cool anyway, so it wasn't a tragedy. Some are for mages, so consider that for your Gnome.
Purely arbitrary. I already had another elf, so I figured why not.
Even if you do find a way to raise his strength by a point (which I don't recall there being one) your score will go to 18 even, no expeptional strength (that means no 18/xx). That only gives you a minor bonus to hit/damage.

As for the cool helmet - it's also wearable by gnomes. Which means your fighter/illusionist can wear it, and it helps tremendously until you can get your hands on some elven chain later on. If it just weren't so damned expensive, like everything in Conlan's shop...

If a backstabbing machine is what you're looking for, I'd go with an elf for your fighter/thief. I've done that combination before, wearing the Boots of Speed, and he's an absolute wrecking machine. Which leads me to my next thing...
I did not, mainly because she was an Illusionist/Thief, and didn't have the most impressive thac0. I didn't think I'd ever land a hit, so I never really tried. She did however make a great bombardier. Make her and my bard invisible, send them into a room and cast simultaneous Fireballs on a room full of unsuspecting foes - priceless. They were a great rear-party tag-team.

As for my skills, every level I would dump points into Find Traps and Open Locks exclusively until they maxed out (which didn't take long). Then I worked on maxing out Hide in Shadows soon after. I ignored Pick Pockets completely, because IMO it's totally useless in IWD. There are, I think, only 1 or 2 people in the entire game worth pickpocketing.

One last thing: since most people like having a pure dwarven Fighter, I have 2 other variations of my ultimate IWD party:

    • Human Paladin
    • Dwarven Fighter
    • Half-Elf Ranger/Cleric
    • Human Fighter X/Druid
    • Gnomish Illusionist/Thief
    • Any race Bard
    OR you can try...
    • Human Paladin
    • Elven Ranger
    • Dwarven Fighter/Cleric (you can try any race here, even Halfling)
    • Half-elven Fighter/Druid
    • Gnomish Illusionist/Thief
    • Any race Bard
    - - -

The key with my Ultimate IWD party combos is, try to have only one of each class (even with multi-classes added in), and try to vary the races, too. The point is to get absolutely as much as you possibly can from the IWD experience - and I believe a party of variety is the key. Since every race and class is represented, very little is left out of the adventure. Stick to those guidelines and you'll do well.

If you have any more questions, or if I need to explain something a little more clearly, please let me know.

hi, i am starting iwd for the first time and i was wondering if this group would be ok:

    human pally

elf f/t (mostly shooting bows, but can switch to weapon/shield for some sneak attack/cripple damage in a pinch)

    some sort of cleric (pure?)

    some sort of mage (pure?)

half-elf bard (do bards get spells for "free" in iwd or do they need scrolls?)

and i'm torn on the last spot...should i get a pure druid? i think i read somewhere that druids can get different story options or quest options so i would like to have one in my party, but a beefy dorf pure fighter could work too with large weapon specs.

also, when do i go to HoW and ToTL areas? after i've been the "classic" iwd campaign or before?

finally, is it possible for a level 1 party to start on insane difficulty (tried HoF mode and got one shot so...)? i like a challenge, although i think HoF is too much trouble for a level 1 newb party to start in.

    thank you!

Hey InfinitelyTrue, welcome to the boards....

    Your group looks fine.
Perhaps you should get one more Fighter for the last spot, there's a lot of heavy fighting ;)

I usually finish the main campaign first. Then I run the expansion only. It works best for me, as it's a whole new story anyway.

I made it on insane once. :D I think i had to cheat a little, but it is possible.
HOF is very hard for a level one guy :p

Well, I'm currently playing a human paladin, soloing through the endgame (she's solod the rest, too, but I'm down to just the last few major encounters.)

It, you look like you've got a bit of 3e experience. I would suggest that you make your cleric a F/C; you take a small hit in clerical power, but not much, and gain a lot of fighting power. Dwarf is good for that. For your final character, I'd suggest a fighter/druid; more fighting power, plus druid abilities to aid in healing and spellcasting.

    The revised party:

    Human Paladin

Elf F/T (you might consider a halfling; less strength, but there's a useful helmet for halflings and gnomes, and your strength doesn't matter with bows, so long as you have at least a 13)

    Dwarven Fighter/Cleric

    Half Elven Fighter/Druid

Half-Elf Bard (you will need scrolls for this character)

Human Dual Class: Thief/Wizard (with maxxed detect traps and nothing else, and skill in bows and crossbows for thief proficiencies; pick up dagger for wizard levels, as there are nice wizard-only daggers)

    I generally go:
    Human Paladin(large swords)
    Human Fighter(large swords)
    Dwarf Fighter(axes)
    Human Fighter(3)/cleric(X)(maces)
    Halfling Fighter/Thief multi(bows,short swords)
    Human Fighter(3)/Mage(X)(bows,halberds)

Do you think it is better to dual class or multiclass?

thanks guys, the advice was very helpful! i'll probably end up with a human fighter->druid (when should i dual to druid? i don't really mind not having the fighter dual late since i'll be replaying anyway for HoF mode).

i'm actually relatively new to the CRPG scene, i've only actually played BG2 and nwn (never finished my fighter/thief, since i am on a 56k and single player is sort of boring for that game). this place was/is a total treasure trove, i've gotten pretty much all my patches and such through this site, will use the link to buy planescape after i finish the iwd ultimate collection (which, incidentally, does NOT come with ToTL as was mentioned in a faq somewhere i think...71mb on a 56k really bites!), i hear the game is a total riot.

my other "rpgish" game is dark age of camelot, i've played that mmo for going on 3-4 years now. :p the IE games are a welcome change of pace after not having played a single player game in so long.

    see you folks around!

    [IMG] Good Ideas there!

So what about the backstabbing with halflings? e.g., undertaker, is that part of your tactic, or did you just take the halfling for the thiefing skills bonuses and (most important) STYLE??

What is also lacking in my possible party is a really good archer... I might go with your first party, DR, though. and wielding the paladin sword sounds tempting.
Isn`t there a Ranger Sword as well? The R/C wouldn`t be able to use it, then... thats an argument for turning the elven fighter into a ranger. but the specialisation... baaah the possibilities are infinite ;)

And: the Druid spells seem to be worth only taking 2 levels in Fighter, right? or go with a multi? I think I`ll take the dual.

Another thing: Dual wielding is NOT possible in IWD I, is it? Even with expansions but without cheating, I mean.

    Cheers, Tillix

Not that I recall. If there was, it wasn't very memorable so don't worry about it. If you keep the Elf a Fighter you can get mastery in bows. It ends up being more worth it then racial enemy (which I always choose as Skeletal Undead).
The best reason to go dual is so that you can specialize in slings and a druid melee weapon (there are a few really cool spears and staves in the game, so pick your favorite). The druid spells - particularly if you have the HoW expansion - are some of the best in the game. So taking a multi-class only causes you to drag along in getting to those great spells (and wildshapes, too). Also, the 2 levels of fighter allow you wear heavy armors, and give you just enough added melee ability to make you half-decent when you have to go toe-to-toe. Trust me - dual is the way to go.
Nope. However, the name of the game in IWD is MISSILE WEAPONS. Most enemies in the game can be taken out from a distance, so pick a missile and a melee for EVERY character, even if it's just slings.

Trust me - go for my original party, you won't be disappointed. Most important of all - stop posting here and start playing! :D
