FIERY CANYON

Pushing the Large Boulders Down

I return to the entrance to the Fiery Canyon, towards the northeast corner of Mount Galadrym. Bishop temporarily lends his Girdle of Cloud Giant Strength to Valeria, who is then able to push the boulders down on the central encampment and get the 50xp. I could have done it earlier, but why not collect both the xp for killing all of the Fire Giants directly and the xp for pushing the boulders down?

Dragon Treasure

Now I enter the Fiery Canyon itself. There will be another ore deposit on the east side, which I later have Calindra collect.

There will be a LOT of gold lying in the hoard, but I can't claim it until I get back to Crossroad Keep. In the meantime, there are plenty of chests and containers. Most of it is random items. The sacks will have a lot of ingots of various metals. There will also be a few set items amongst the containers:

Three of the chests can yield a high value gem. I milk them for a Blue Diamond and two Beljurils, the reasons for which will soon be explained.

There will also be a chest that is called the Tholapsyx Chest. It will yield a Blue Diamond, a King's Tear, a Star Sapphire, two Rubies, and two Diamonds, in addition to other random items. If you accepted a quest available only to a Paladin or a Cleric, then a Paladin Knight-Captain will also get the Holy Avenger (Longsword +3, +5 vs. evil, Cold Iron, Dispel Magic on hit DC=20, +2d4 damage vs. evil, 24 spell resistance, Protection from Evil) while a Cleric Knight-Captain will get a Loremaster's Mace (+4 Mace, +3 Wisdom, Extra Turning, +1d6 divine damage vs. evil).

Best Armor Upgrade

I report my recently found Ore Deposits to Calindra, and she leaves to tap them.

Now that a few more Ore Deposists have been found during Act III, I can now pay Edario 30,000gp to obtain the best possible armor upgrade for the Greycloaks at Crossroad Keep.

Gift from the Greycloaks

I enter the Keep and get the Shortsword +5 as a reward for maximizing the Unit Strength and Morale of the Greycloaks. I needed to get the best armor upgrade first before this became possible.

Recovering the Dragon's Hoard

I speak to Kana again. In the meantime, I had completed the quest to recover a dragon's treasure hoard, and she now informs me that she has sent Greycloaks in order to recover it. The results vary. I would have gotten the full 200,000gp into the Keep coffers if GreyCloak Morale was High, Peasant Morale was Very High, and Road Security was High. Peasant Morale was High instead of Very High, so I didn't get the optimum result. I'm not bothered by this, since I already have almost everything I want, and can easily afford the rest. Having Road Security has High, and Best of the Best Training for the Greycloaks suffices to recover 170,000gp, which is what happens in my playthrough.

Conscriptions

I leave and re-enter the Keep several times, speaking to Kana in each instance, until Keep Time reaches 80%. Kana then discusses the idea of conscripting some of the farmers into the Greycloaks. Katriona makes known her objections to the idea. There are penalties to going along with the idea. Choosing "Recruit every able hand." results in +1 Unrest. Choosing "We need everyone we can get - grab them by force if necessary." results in -5 Peasant Growth Modifier and +2 Unrest. The only way to avoid any penalties is to refuse to conscript.

Withdrawing Keep Funds

Keep Time will stall at 82% until I've destroyed the nearby Shadow Reaver.

By now I've accumulated quite a bit of gold in my Keep coffers, about 230,000, even after all of my upgrades purchases. I don't really need the cash, but I'm showing how to anyway for anybody who decides they need to withdraw money from the Keep in order to finance any expensive purchases of their own. I can only withdraw in increments of 5,000gp. However, I can rapidly burn through the coffers with a sequence of mouse-click on Kana and then repetitions of 5 & 4.

Crafting More Wondrous Items

It's time to craft a couple more wondrous items. Valeria places two Leather Hides, plus a Radiant Water Essence, and a Beljuril gem into the Magician's Workbench. She casts an Eagle's Splendour spell on the workbench to create a Nymph Cloak +8 for Grobnar. Greater Charisma increases the damage of his Curse Song, as well as the number of spells he can cast each day, as well as the saving throw DC of those spells.

Valeria next places one Leather Hide into the Magician's Workbench, along with a Radiant Fire Essence and another Beljuril gem. Casting a Fox's Cunning spell on the workbench creates a Headband of Intellect +8 for Sand. More Intelligence for Sand will mean more spells and a greater saving throw DC for his spells.

Boots of Striding

The video begins with me purchasing a Jacinth from Randolph, before returning to Crossroad Keep.

Valeria places a Rogue Stone in the Magician's Workbench. along with a Leather Hide and a Glowing Earth Essence. She casts a Bear's Endurance spell in order to create Boots of Striding +6 for Qara. More Constitution and hit points helps any character. She repeats the process to make another Boots of Endurance +6 for Grobnar.

She then places the Jacinth in the Workbench, along with another Leather Hide and a Weak Glowing Earth Essence. Casting Bear's Endurance on the Workbench creates Boots of Striding +4 for Sand. Sand will end up betraying me anyway, so I don't mind him getting relatively worse items in comparison to my other comrades.

Robe of the Archmagi

I begin by having Valeria pull her three remaining Fairy Dusts out of her Bag of Holding. I reload until I use of the Mortar & Pestle on them results in three Radiant Earth Essences. I'll need them very shortly.

Now I put the following together into the Magician's Bench:

Valeria then casts a Mage Armor spell on the bench, resulting in the creation of the Robe of the Archmagi (+5 armor class, +3 saving throws, +1 5th level Sorcerer or Wizard spell, +1 6th level Sorcerer spell, +1 7th level Sorcerer or Wizard spell, 20 spell resistance, Spell Penetration). It's the best arcane caster robe in the game, and Qara gets it.

Qara also hands off her Mage's Battle Robe to Sand.

Fortified Armors

Now I place Valeria's Mithral Chainshirt +5 into the Magician's Workbench, along with a Blue Diamond I found, a Radiant Earth Essence, and a Glowing Power Essence. A Banishment spell from Qara adds the fortified property (immunity to critical hits / sneak attacks) to the armor. She spends a fair amount of time on the front lines, so it makes sense to add the Fortified enchantment that will immunize her against critical hits and sneak attacks. Her ability to use spells like Greater Stoneskin and Ethereal Visage will augment her immunity to critical hits, as she then takes very little damage if at all when she happens to get struck with a physical attack.

I repeat the process for Khelgar's Robe of the Shining Hand +5. Khelgar is also a front-line fighter, so it makes sense to immunize him against critical hits, all the more so since I don't have any Constitution-boosting items for him.

Note that neither character needs to add a spell resistance bonus to their armors. Khelgar's spell resistance increases with each level as a Monk. Valeria will get her spell resistance from an amulet she'll find fairly soon, and later on from a connection to a romantic partner during Mask of the Betrayer.

Armors of Spell Resistance

Now I add Ammon Jerro's Dragon Armor to the Workbench, along with one of the Beljuril gems I found in the hoard, along with a Radiant Fire Essence, and a Radiant Power Essence. Elanee casts Spell Resistance on the Workbench to add 22 spell resistance to the Dragon Armor. The spell resistance is certainly a welcome benefit for a character who usually keeps a distance from the front-line action. I repeat the process for Grobnar's Dragon Armor.

Now it's time to search for the Wendersnaven.
