ASYLUM TESTS

Tests of Clarity

I go down the stairs and am subjected to a series of tests and riddles. First I have to shoot down a bunch of Goblin Archers, which is easy enough. The test master then teleports me to another room.

In this room I have to kill a Spore Colony which can spawn Red Myconids. The Myconids aren't outstanding when it comes to fighting ability, but they're capable of confusing party members. Once I kill everything off the test master demands another riddle, the answer to which is 'splinter'.

Note that Avastrian is still confused. When I get the chance I have the rest of the party huddle him against the wall so that he can't attack anyone else besides party members.

Tests of Madness

The party now finds itself in a room filled with the spirits of the insane. Before speaking with them, however, Avastrian searches the large table in the middle of the room. It has a Cloak of Reflection (reflects all electrical damage back onto the source). Imoen will wear this cloak for the rest of the game. She spends most of her time well away from the rough stuff, so it makes sense to give her a cloak that completely immunizes her against electrical damage. Most of the other party members will also have items that reduce electrical damage as well.

The answers to the riddles are: 'nothing', 'river', 'fear' and 'memory'.

Troll Altar

I arrive in a dark desert of sorts. Ahead will be a Troll Shaman, a Spectral Troll, and a regular Troll. I take out the Shaman first, and have Minsc finish him off with a few Acid Arrows. I then take out the Spectral Troll, and then the regular Troll. The Shaman leaves behind his head.

The Apparition appears and wants to know if I'm ready. I indicate that I want to investigate the nearby altar first. I place the Shaman's head in the altar and it gets replaced with a Bone Club +2, +3 vs. undead. This club can hit monsters that require +3 or better weapons to hit, so it makes for a good interim weapon for Jaheira.

Now I indicate to the Apparition that I'm ready to be tested. I pass and each party member gets 51,250xp for answering the riddles correctly and for not using the Mind Flayer painting earlier. Otherwise each party member would have gotten 41,250xp.

You may notice that I'm hesitant about casting protective spells and the such. I cannot rest until I've had another confrontation with Irenicus. Otherwise Avastrian will turn into the Slayer and go out of control, attacking his own comrades. I therefore want to save all the resources I can for my next fight with Irenicus.

I can now make good my escape from Spellhold.
