Avernus' Tower

Bridge to the Tower

Now I find myself on a bridge, with a tower on the other side. About two Skeletons will charge me, while three others will shoot arrows from a distance. I stay where I am, as the way ahead is trapped. Aldarion plants a Tempest on the Archers. The party then takes out the melee skeletons that come forward first, then the archers with return missile fire. Leliana disarms the traps afterwards.

Power of Blood

I go through the door, where there are more skeletons to fight. I click on Avernus' Notes and Avernus' Book to learn of Avernus' experiments and his role in events past. I have a choice as to whether or not to drink his vile concoction, which can grant access to a tree of Darkspawn-taint related powers, the precise nature of which depends on whether your Grey Warden is a Warrior or a Rogue or a Mage. I made a roleplaying choice not to.

For anyone who's interested in the abilities that are offered by the Power of Blood, check out this Dragon Age Wiki entry:

Avernus

Now I go ahead north and speak at length with Avernus. If you want to ally with Sophia, keep in mind that fighting Avernus in his own sanctum can be very dangerous. He will have plenty of traps strewn about the room, several Skeletons will come to his aid, and he usually zips off a Fireball right away. The relatively safer route is to lure him back to Sophia so that he's within reach right away. In any event, I chose to side with him since I had already killed Sophia.

Leliana loots a couple of containers. There will also be a corpse left rotting on an iron maiden on the west side of the room. I click on it to get the final Codex Entry needed for the Ancient History side quest.

Closing the Veil

Now it is time to help Avernus seal the Fade. The demons will arrive in several waves, so it is often important to ride that delicate balance between doing what is necessary to take down each wave with efficiency and conserving enough resources to handle the long haul.

The first wave consists of three Lesser Rage Demons. The party is able to get through this wave briskly with straight physical attacks.

The next wave is a few Greater Shades and a couple of Ash Wraiths. Physical attacks suffice, although Wynne frequently has to use her healing abilities and the odd Lesser Lyrium Potion to keep the party on its feet.

The next wave is two Ash Wraiths and two Lesser Rage Demons. Physical attacks and Wynne's healing spells again suffice to get through this wave.

The last fight is against the boss, a Desire Demon. Here is what I mean by striking that right balance between immediate efficiency and conserving enough for the long haul. I want to minimize the Desire Demon's spellcasting as much as possible. Aldarion aims a Crushing Prison at the Desire Demon, but it gets resisted. Wynne, however, manages to knock it down with a Stone Fist. This allows Aldarion and Alistair to stay on top of the Demon with their attacks. Note how Alistair also frustrates the Demon by frequently knocking her down with his shield talents. The Demon does manage to catch Aldarion with a Cone of Cold, so Wynne protects him with a Lifeward spell. It's only a matter of time before the Demon falls.

Now it is time to restore the Keep.
