Current Act - Curst:

Previous Act: Ravel's Maze  |  Next Act: The Outlands and The Hells

CURST PRISON

You have reached the Prison where you will find the Deva that Ravel told you about. Another thing you will find here is, of course, GUARDS! All of the guards in this prison are very displeased to find you here – and they want to make your stay as short and painful as they can!

Other things you will find down here are the portal to the Outlands and Act 8 – and a new joinable NPC!

Your job is to find Trias at 8. Before he can tell you anything, you must help him escape by bringing him his sword, Celestial Fire. The sword is used to power the prison and is guarded by Cassius at 21. Seek out Cassius and defeat him one way or another to get the sword, then return to Trias and free him from his chains. Trias then tells you to seek out a fiend, Fhjull Forked-Tongue, in the Outlands. Find the portal at 5 and step through it (but make sure to check out location 22 behind the portal first!) to progress to Act 8.

There are groups of Curst Guards at the various positions marked 23 on the map. They will all attack you on sight. Try to attract the attention of a few guards at a time, lest your company be overwhelmed. My favorite method is to let Annah hide in the shadows and scout ahead, then let Morte use Litany of Curses on the nearest guard to lure him forward to the waiting party.

Spending Time in Curst Prison

The exit back to the Underground is at 1.

A group of Trelons at 2 will attack you the moment you enter this area.

The barrel standing at 3 contains a Heart Charm and a Scroll of Lightning.

The container at 4 holds the following items:

The gate at 5 can neither be lockpicked or bashed open. Once you have found Trias and brought him his sword, you can open a portal to the Outlands here. You can then walk through the portal and examine the room on the other side.

The container at 6 holds these items:

The barrel at 7 contains:

At 8 you will find Trias. Step up on his dais and speak to him.

Trias claims he came to redeem Curst but was captured and imprisoned here, and his wings were burned in the process. He knows what you should do next but can't tell you anything as long as he doesn't have his sword, Celestial Fire. Trias tells you how to open the gate at 10, which has been impassable until now.

Once you have found Trias' sword, bring it back to him for 306,250 XP. Trias will take the sword from you and be released. Before leaving you, he asks what reward you want. But the only thing he can give you is knowledge, in the form of information on who you should seek out next: A fiend, Fhjull Forked-Tongue, who is hiding in the Outlands. Trias gives you a link from his chains (which won't show up in your inventory) that functions as a key to the portal at 5.

If you attack Trias or strike him instead of his chains, you lose a source of information vital to your quest, ending the game as a loss. So don't attack him at this point!

Trias knows who you should seek out next.

One of the barrels at 9 contains:

The locked gate at 10 can only be opened after you have spoken to Trias and gotten his quest to find his sword. When you walk through it, a Prison Guard will demand to know your business. No matter what you tell him, he will attack you.

The Outer Ring of the Prison is at 11. As you might have guessed, it is teeming with Prison Guards, none of whom are willing to tolerate your presence!

One of the Guards at 12 has a Finger-Bone Key which you need to open the doors to the Middle and Inner Rings of the Prison.

In the Middle Ring at 13 you will find another two Guards. If you turned in Roberta in Curst, you will also find her here. She is NOT happy with you. ;-) Seems her husband, whom you didn't get killed, took up with Kiri the harlot after Roberta was jailed for plotting to kill him.

The Inner Ring of the Prison is at 14. It is also teeming with extremely hostile Guards.

One of the Guards at 15 has a reminder note saying he shouldn't step on the trap in the floor, as he doesn't need to get into the Inner Sanctum. This tells you how to open the door at 20.

If you turned in An'izius in Curst, he will be at 16. Not that he has anything to say to you, except for a few insults. ;-)

The container at 17 holds:

Stepping on the trap at 18 will give you ~40 HP worth of damage, so if possible have Annah (or yourself, if you're playing a Thief) disarm it. Either way you gain 87,500 XP. More to the point, the door at 20 can now be opened.

If you turned in Siabha in Curst, she will be at 19. And she is just as "happy" to see you as Roberta and An'izius. ;-)

The door to the Inner Sanctum is at 20. You need to either disarm or set off the trap at 18 before you can open this door.

In the Inner Sanctum at 21 you will meet Cassius. He looks like a meek Nupperibo but don't be fooled – this guy is really a weapon from the Abyss and he packs a punch! Speak to him and tell him that you want the blade. You will have to defeat Cassius in either Strength, Wits or Speed:

Once you have defeated Cassius, the sword will no longer be powering the Prison, all prisoners will escape from their cells, and a fresh bunch of Guards will appear and kill the prisoners. There will be major fights at points 10 and 20 on the map. You can interfere with the fights if you like but since you have probably already taken a beating or two at the hands of the Guards, I suggest that you simply run back to Trias to give him his sword.

Vhailor is the empty suit of armor standing at 22. You can only meet him after you have opened the portal at 5.

Vhailor is the last joinable NPC you will find in the game. If he joins your party and you have to leave another party member behind, please note that you won't be able to return and get the other party member back.

When you first initiate dialog, if your Wisdom is at least 18 you can gain a memory (60,000 XP) of meeting Vhailor in an earlier incarnation. Otherwise try to take his helmet to awaken him.

Vhailor will first tell you that he is Vhailor, a Mercykiller. If Morte and/or Annah are in your party, they will wince at the word "Mercykiller".

When he tells you that Mercykillers serve Justice and that mercy is weakness, you can answer him:

If you choose the third answer, you can take a conversation path where you ask Vhailor to define laws and force him to see that since men and women make laws, and since they are imperfect, then laws cannot be perfect. If your Charisma is 21 or better, you will convince Vhailor that his existence is meaningless, and he disintegrates (90,000 XP); if your Charisma is lower than 21, Vhailor attacks you.

You can ask Vhailor how he knows when to dispense justice, then ask him to look inside your party members. Ask him to look inside himself or yourself to regain a memory of how you trapped him here for 90,000 XP. When asked if you have ever committed a crime, you can confess and then explain how you have already been punished (demands an Intelligence or Wisdom of 16 or better). If you refuse to let him judge you, Vhailor attacks you.

To get Vhailor to join your party, you must simply avoid turning him hostile and tell him that you seek justice and would like his help. Getting him to join nets you another 90,000 XP.
