CASTLE REDCLIFFE - MAIN FLOOR

Jowan as a Prisoner

I descend in to the Castle dungeon, and then win a fairly routine fight against three Skeletons. Now it's time to speak with an old acquaintance, Jowan. Whether you free him, leave him in his cell, or kill him, is all up to you. I chose to free him so that the quest called 'Jowan's Intention' becomes available later on. This does lose approval with Wynne, but I can rectify that later on with gifts and such.

The last part of the video is a fight against more Skeletons. The placements become too interspersed for any spells to recommend themselves. It thus becomes the kind of fight that shows the benefits of stacked sustainables and letting the auto-attacks take care of things by themselves.

History of the Chantry - Chapter 2

I take the stairs up to the main floor, turn right and then kill a single Skeleton. I next enter the large room to the south, which has several Shades in it. I am able to overwhelm them in straight physical combat, aided by my sustainables. The book yields a Codex Entry for "History of the Chantry - Chapter 2" and 50 xp.

Redcliffe Shields

I leave the chapel room the way I came and head east along the hallway. Some nearby Skeletons attack me, but I deal with them in routine physical combat. A room to the north has a lot of mundane equipment, including more than one Redcliffe Shield (which isn't anything special).

Mabari in Castle Redcliffe

Now I continue east. Once I reach the next door, Aldarion deactivates his Combat Magic sustained ability in order to free up some mana for the next battle.

There will be a LOT of undead on the other side of the door. I have Wynne cast Earthquake to hold them back after I open the door. Aldarion, with Spell Might active, casts Blizzard and then Tempest to unleash the Storm of the Century combo. The Storm of the Century will continuously score massive electrical damage on its victims for several intervals. The battle is easily won after that.

There is another benefit to this as well. There is a room to the north that has several Mabari Hounds in it. The Storm of the Century killed off the Mabari that were on the south side of the room as well. Once I reach the north room, there are only three Mabari left, and they're easily killed. One of them leaves behind a Black Leather Collar (+0.25 armor penetration, +2 armor).

There will be the odd container with a random item. One container has a Lamb Bone, a Warpaint of the Tempest (+30% electrical resistance), and the Kaddis of Hakkon Wintersbreath (+30% cold resistance).

Lost in the Castle

The video begins with Leliana disarming a tripwire, and then the party killing a few Skeletons. Leliana then goes around looting various containers. At 1:30 of the video I highlight a door that cannot be opened until much later.

At 2:13 of the video I highlight a door. This is where Owen's daughter, Valena, can be found. I decide not to because I want the Far Song bow for Leliana. I roleplay it like, "I looked but didn't find her."

At 2:30 is another massive fight against many undead. The room on the other side of the door is too small for crowd control or offensive spells. I employed a different tactic. Leliana waits until the undead close in, and then she hits them with a Soulrot Bomb. This earns her aggro as the undead go straight after her. But this works out anyway as the undead have simply set themselves up for Leliana's Captivating Song. They fall quite quickly after that. The remainder of the video consists of me looting various containers and making my way down to the stairs to the Cellar of the Castle.

The Courtyard of Castle Redcliffe

I now go through a smaller section of the Castle Basement that has a few containers with random items. One of the chests has a Love Letter as part of the Correspondence Interruptus quest, but I leave that be for the time being.

I now go up to the Courtyard. There will be several Skeleton Archers at the top of the stairs to the right. Leliana uses her Bow with Aim in order to take out the Archers near the top walls one by one. Wynne chips in with a Heal whenever Leliana gets low on health.

There will be a Revenant and some more Skeletons to the west. Leliana engages the Skeletons with missile fire in a process of attrition to take them out and draw them away so as to deprive the Revenant of much of its support. When they come forward, they get hacked apart in melee. The Revenant does come forward at some point, but it's too late. This Revenant is not quite as tough as others I've encountered, so it was a matter of ganging up on it and casting Healing spells when needed. If you have trouble with the fight, you can try hitting the lever to the south so that Ser Perth and the other Knights of Redcliffe can help you during the battle.

The Possessed Child

The first part of this video is where I converse with a demonically possessed Connor. At some point Connor will leave and his servants will end up fighting you. This fight is fairly hard to make specific recommendations for, largely because who gets positioned where and who attacks who can be pretty random. Yet it shouldn't be that difficult, so play it by ear. Taking out the melee fighters and then the archers in straight physical combat worked for me.

Now I make a roleplaying choice to try and call on the Circle to help save Connor, instead of killing him. Note that killing him, or getting Jowan to kill Isolde as a blood sacrifice to save Connor, are sure fire ways to anger Alistair. He may even leave you altogether if you can't make a persuasion check with him afterwards.

Suits of Armor

The party now goes to the room adjacent to the left. They are forced into battle against several animated suits of armor. This can be pretty tough, since they all have Champion abilities like Rally and War Cry (which can knock the party members off their feet). The upside is that the Knights of Redcliffe are helping me out. The arrangement works out perfectly, as Aldarion gets surrounded by most of them. He neutralizes this when his script activates Shimmering Shield (the sustained ability that confers hefty damage resistance for an Arcane Warrior) in response to getting surrounded by three or more enemies. This leaves the other party members free to go to work on the other armor suits. Suffice it to say that I keep an eye on my Health and Mana, and thus eventually wear them down.

Redcliffe Vault Key

I open the door to the south, whereupon I get attacked by several undead and the Chamberlain. Leliana helps matters along by dropping a Soulrot Bomb on them. The Chamberlain leaves behind the Redcliffe Vault Key, which I will use pretty soon.

Alistair's Mother's Amulet

Now I go into the room west of where I fought the Suits of Armor. The desk has a book that yields a Codex entry for the Orlesian Empire and 50xp. It also contains Alistair's Mother's Amulet. I get it to Alistair for an approval boost as well as a dialogue cutscene.

Now I go up to the second floor of the Castle.
