CASTLE REDCLIFFE - UPPER FLOOR

The Guerrins of Ferelden

I go up the stairs to the next floor. Leliana has recently acquired the Master Ranger talent, so she can now summon a Blight Wolf. I then show the script that I always set when I summon a Blight Wolf.

I continue down the hallway, and get ambushed by several undead from all sides. I am nonetheless able to overpower them using physical combat. Note how the Blight Wolf, having good attacking ability and a good defense rating, is able to hold the rear while the other party members go to work on the front side.

I then go through the first door on the right. One of the containers in the room has a book called "The Guerrins of Ferelden", which I gift to Wynne.

Stone Dragon Statuette

I return to the hallway and then continue south. I get attacked by two more Skeletons, which I dispatch easily.

There will be two small rooms nearby, one to the west and one to the south. The room to the west has a chest with a random item, as well as a Book that provides a Codex entry for "Journal for the Tranquil". The room to the south has a chest that holds the Stone Dragon Statuette. I gift the Statuette to Alistair.

Redcliffe Vault

Now I return to the hallway that runs north-south, and then go east. I run into more undead, and again I overpower them during physical combat.

The door to the room to the north requires either a very high ability to unlock doors (Device Mastery + Cunning) or the Redcliffe Vault Key to open. Either way earns 50xp. Inside will be several chests with items, most of them random. The notable unique items to be found are:

Connor Guerrin

Now I go east and then north from the vault. Connor will be in the middle of a large room. Be forewarned, if you attempt to enter the room where Arl Eamon lies unconscious on a bed to the north, the Desire Demon will take full control over Connor and force the party into combat. This essentially commits the party to resolving the quest in a way that results in Connor dying.

I go into Connor's bed room to the left, and get the Codex entry for "Aveline, Knight of Orlais". I then speak with Connor and promise to free him from his demonic possession. I then make my way out of the Castle.

Fade Ritual

Now I travel to the Circle Tower and speak with First Enchanter Irving. He agrees to perform a ritual that will send Aldarion directly into the Fade so that he can confront the Desire Demon that is in possession of Connor. I simply travel back to Castle Redcliffe and speak with Irving again in order to commence the ritual.

Freeing Connor from the Desire Demon

I volunteer myself to go the Fade instead of Wynne or Morrigan. One of the reasons is that cold-based spells (which Aldarion has but the others don't) work so much better on the Rage Demons that help the Desire Demon. In any event I have to pursue the Desire Demon, and her Rage Demon minions, enough times before I can confront her personally.

You can bargain with it. The options in that situation are a moment of erotic pleasure with her, unlocking the Blood Mage specialization, or the Tome of Ethereal Suggestion (+1 spell for a Mage).

I prefer to kill her. She'll try to get the jump on me with Horror. If I'm down on either Health or Mana I'll simply use the nearby Lyrium vein, or chug a potion. In any event, I have to wear her health down and the tactics vary according to the situation. If she casts Spell Shield on herself, then I switch over to melee attacks on her. If her Spell Shield has worn off, then I'll use Cone of Cold or single target spells.

Once she's taken enough damage, she'll disappear and replace herself with a number of clones. I tick them off one at a time to reveal her true self. I then repeat the cycle a second time to defeat her for good.

Redcliffe is Saved

Now it's the funerary dirge for those killed in Redcliffe. I also take on the mission of finding the Urn of Sacred Ashes. But first, I have more business to attend to in Redcliffe.

Far Song

Now I click on a book near Arl Eamon's bed to get the Codex Entry for "The First Blight - Chapter 2" and 50xp. I then get another 50xp for opening the vault door a second time.

Next, I return to Redcliffe and enter to Owen's house. If I had saved Valena in the Castle (which I didn't), Owen would have an upgraded inventory that includes:

But I deliberately chose not to save Valena in order to have a different Blacksmith with a different inventory become available.

Now I leave, travel to the Castle via the overland map, and then travel back to Redcliffe Village. A new blacksmith has set up shop, as Owen has hung himself. I use a Persuasion/Lie check to convince him that Owen had been a close friend. This gets me the Faulty Amulet (-3 armor, +20 mental resistance, +20 physical resistance). Tempting, but I'll pass.

The Blacksmith's different inventory consists mostly of mundane wares but with a single prize that costs 120 gold. It's the Far Song (+2 damage, rapid aim, +3% ranged critical chance, +10 attack, +10% ranged critical damage), the best bow in the whole game. Leliana now has her bow for the rest of the game.

It is time to do some quests available from the Chanter's Board.
