CADASH THAIG

Speaking with Shale

I speak at length with Shale, and there are plenty of opportunities for me to up my approval with her and up her Strength score. Sympathizing with some of her past ordeals, flattery (as long as it's not overdone), and avoiding the suggestion that she's a useful tool and nothing more, are reliable ways to gain approval.

At one point in the conversation she'll bring up the subject of Caridin. If I had sided with Branka against Caridin, I would have to make a Persuasion check to convince her to stay. But since I sided with Caridin, things go much smoother. It is this particular line in the conversation that is needed to trigger the quest called "A Golem's Memories" and access to the Cadash Thaig.

Gemstones and Crystals for Shale

I head back to Orzammar, and take the opportunity to advance Shale and a couple of other characters another level. I now gift Shale with the Remarkable Gemstones that I've collected so far in order to up my approval with her.

I next buy the Large Brilliant Ice Crystal and the Small Brilliant Lightning Crystal from Garin, for reasons that I describe in Shale's character profile page. If Garin doesn't have the crystals you want, simply enter the nearby Diamond Quarter and come back to see if he has the crystals you want.

Now I travel to Caridin's Cross, and this prompts Shale to remember where she comes from thus revealing the Cadash Thaig on the Deep Roads map.

To Cadash Thaig

Now I travel to the Cadash Thaig. I get everybody set with their sustainables. I charge ahead and casually kill a few Darkspawn with straight physical force. Shale then has a remembrance of sorts.

Blood-Gorged Amulet

I continue on, and take out another group of Darkspawn. Wynne sets up a Grease + Fireball for the incoming Darkspawn. She and Leliana then take out the archers with missile fire.

Further ahead will be another group of Darkspawn led by a Hurlock Emissary. Aldarion instantly takes out the Emissary with a Mana Clash. It becomes a straight physical mow down afterwards. The Emissary leaves behind the Blood-Gorged Amulet (+12 Constitution, -3 Strength, -3 Willpower), which I don't really have any use for.

Deepstalkers and Darkspawn

There will be plenty of both Deepstalkers and Darkspawn to fight throughout the Thaig. As soon as I cross the bridge, there will be Deepstalkers up close as well as a lot of Deepstalkers and Darkspawn fighting each other at a distance. Aldarion deactivates his combat related sustainables to free up mana. He then puts a Storm of the Century over the distant group, letting the rest of his party take out the closer Deepstalkers.

I then go in a north to south direction, where I frequently get swarmed by Deepstalkers from all sides. I very often deal with them in straight physical combat, although Leliana will use her Captivating Song if they become too numerous.

I continue further south, where I now have to fight Darkspawn instead. At one point I get ambushed by several Shrieks, which can get pretty dangerous. Wynne helps things out by planting a Glyph of Warding in the thick of things, and then using a Group Heal when the party has collectively taken enough damage.

A Golem's Memories

Now I begin to make my way through narrow high-rising bridges. I also continue to waste groups of Darkspawn with routine physical force. Once I cross the second bridge, I get ambushed by a large Darkspawn force that includes a boss Ogre. I make the Ogre the first priority, in order to minimize the use of its special attacks. Leliana earns 'aggro' on the Ogre with missile fire, so she switches over to her melee weapons and then coats them with a Deathroot Extract. Wynne also protects her with a Lifeward. Once the Ogre falls, killing off the rest of the Darkspawn becomes much easier.

The video concludes with clicking on the very large stone statue, whereby Shale has another remembrance. This marks the completion of Shale's personal quest, and it can also result in a very large boost to influence with her.

Cadash Stompers and Dead Thaig Shanker

First, I loot the dead Ogre's body. It leaves behind a few random items, as well as:

I also loot the chest for a dagger called the Dead Thaig Shanker (+5 Cunning, +0.5 armor penetration, +6 attack, interrupts spellcasting). This will be Zevran's off-hand weapon for the rest of the game, and the key feature is the hefty bonuses to both Cunning and attack rating.

Now it's time to do Oghren's personal quest.
