PREDATOR DEN

Predator Den

Paragon Snow Leopard

I enter the Predator Den at #1 on the map, whereupon Okku makes some off-hand comments about what kind of creatures reside in the Den. I press on ahead, and kill a few Greater Snow Leopards.

I continue onto #2, and end up having to fight a LOT of Greater Snow Leopards. A party that's protected well enough and can inflict enough damage with their weapons should have little trouble mowing down the beasts. Even so, I indulge some offensive spellcasting from both Valeria (Empowered Firebrand) and Gann (Empowered Ice Storm and Empowered Fire Storm) to move things along. There is also a Paragon Snow Leopard here. It has a pretty good regeneration rate, but it is nonetheless quite easy to outpace its regeneration with the damage from my weapons.

A nearby Fell Troll corpse has Relli's Belt of Mischief (+1 deflection bonus to armor class vs. lawful, Confusion (10) 1 / day, Greater Spell Breach (11) 1 / day, Power Word: Blind 1 / day), but I have no use for it.

Paragon Wolverine

Now I travel over to #3, where I get attacked by a very large pack of Greater Wolverines. Among them is a Paragon Wolverine, which for all intents and purposes presents the same level of difficulty as the Paragon Snow Leopard. Here I simply waste them in melee combat.

Paragon Beast of Malar

At #4 is the Paragon Beast of Malar. I may as well give a word of warning, this can potentially be one of the toughest battles there is during the expansion. The Beast combines a very high armor class with an extremely rapid rate of regeneration. It is entirely possible for even a very well equipped party to bring it to the brink of death several times, only for the Beast to regain full health each time and ultimately outlast the party after it runs out of buffs and spells and anything else. There is more than one way to go about defeating the Beast.

One method is of course to hit it with a spell like Finger of Death and cross your fingers that it doesn't make the saving throw.

Another method is to hit with several Harm spells to bring its health down as quickly as possible. This method still carries the risk of the Beast making a full recovery. A refinement of the method, and one I've used before, is to hit with a Power Word: Kill spell once its hit points are low enough, thereby preventing a full recovery.

Then there's the method I show here, which is to simply hit it with several Energy Drain spells. Hit it with enough Energy Drains that will outmatch its hit dice, and the Beast will die instantly.

The Beast leaves behind the Legendary Blood. For evil parties, like the one I have Zarathos lead, the Legendary Blood can be used instead of the Pure Sanctuary Water as the base for a different anointing solution, and one with much more damaging consequences.

My next destination is the Burning Grove.
