ANTIVAN CROWS

The Trial of Crows

I now have Zevran in the party, partly to show what his build is capable of, but also because doing quests for the Antivan Crows becomes more meaningful when Zevran is in the party.

I take another look at Cesar's wares in the Market District. I then speak with the man behind him, Master Ignacio. Master Ignacio vaguely indicates that he may need my help, but not just yet. I then make to leave the District, whereupon a young boy delivers me a message beckoning me to seek out Master Ignacio in the Gnawed Noble Tavern.

Master Ignacio is in a small room east of the Bartender. The short of it is that I agree to do a few hit jobs for him. The dialogue is rather better with Zevran present as well.

The First Trial

The first job is to assassinate a man named Paedan. The clue to finding Paedan is on a poster near the entrance to the Elven Alienage. Its first part indicates the Pearl as Paedan's location, while the second part reads "The Griffons will rise again". This phrase is in fact a password.

I then head over to the Pearl. Paedan and his crew can be found on the other side of a door towards the southeast corner of the Pearl. I give the password and enter. Paedan and his crew attack. Note that his fight won't occur if I had already killed Arl Howe beforehand. Paedan and his crew are standing together in a tight row in the hallway, so Aldarion gets the jump on them with a Cone of Cold. Wynne shatters one of the Qunari Mercenaries with a Stonefist. It then becomes a matter of wearing them down physically.

I report the completion of the job to Master Ignacio, who makes two more contracts available.

Mercenary Hunt

The next quest is to track down several Qunari Warriors called the Kadan-Fe Mercenaries. An area called the "Kadan-Fe Hideout" now appears on the world map. I found that I could make this fight much easier by simply edging forward until the first Mercenary edges forward. Once that happens, I let him come to me and kill him alone. It is then a matter of repeating the process, or waiting for the rest of them to come to me in a slow trickle when ganging up on one of the Mercenaries brings me a little closer and thus prompts one or two more to start coming forward. The Coarse Cut Gauntlets (+2% melee critical chance) is my reward, although I have no use for them.

An Audience with the Ambassador

The next quest is to kill Ambassador Gainley. He is in the room in the very northwest corner of the Royal Palace in Orzammar. Being able to fulfill this quest was not possible until either I allied myself with Prince Bhelen, or had completed the Paragon of her Kind quest. The room is a large one, so Aldarion shuts down his combat-related sustainables and places a Storm of the Century in the room. Wynne also cranks out the crowd-control with an Earthquake right in the middle of the room, a Glyph of Repulsion right at the door, and a Grease in the middle of the room. She then adds an Inferno-based Grease Fire on top of the Storm of the Century. Suffice it to say that nothing makes it out alive.

The Ambassador leaves behind a random item. The table at the back of the room has Trian's Journal, which provides 50xp plus a Codex Entry. My reward for the quest is another Precision-Geared Recurve (+4 attack, +1.5 armor penetration), which Sten will use.

The Ransom Drop

My last job is to participate in a Ransom Drop with Howe's men, who have kidnapped the son of somebody important. A "Ransom Drop Location" appears on the map of Denerim. Things don't quite go as the party expects though. Howe's men show up without the kidnapped child, and immediately attack. The battle follows familiar themes. Aldarion rushes forward and absorbs the brunt of the onslaught, helped as he is by his multiple combat enhancing sustainables. Leliana keeps them locked down with Captivating Song until the crowd thins out. Zevran goes around looking for opportunities for backstabs. Wynne fires away with her staff, and uses her healing spells when necessary.

A pair of leather gloves called Red Jenny Seekers (+15% critical / backstab damage) is my reward. However, Leliana and Zevran already have gloves that are more useful for them. Master Ignacio informs me that I have just completed my last job for the Antivan Crows for the time being. He also advises me that Cesar will have a special stock available for purchase in the Market District. He then leaves.

Cesar's Special Stock

Now I can avail myself of Cesar's special stock. But first, I spend the first few parts of the video buying back a few items. These include buying back the Earth's Portable Bulwark from the Circle Tower Quartermaster, buying back the Vanguard, as well as the leather armor called Shadows of the Empire from Legnard in Orzammar. The reason for this is that these items provide Strength bonuses that I'll need to equip a particular item for Zevran.

I then talk to Cesar in the Market square, and drop Master Ignacio's name to access the special stock. Cesar will now sell many of the more potent poison recipes, if you're interested, as well as various armors, weapons, and crafting components. Unique items of potential interest include:

I like the Executioner's Helm for Zevran, because Zevran's build is a very stamina-intensive one. It also looks pretty cool on him. The problem is that it's a Dragonbone Heavy Helm, which means a minimum Strength requirement of 38 to wear. But I show the way around it. Aldarion lends Zevran his Andruil's Blessing belt, and his Key to the City ring, both of which will provide +2 bonuses to Strength. Leliana also lends Zevran her Helm of Honnleath and her Harvest Ring, which again both provide +2 bonuses to Strength. Zevran puts the items on, but he's not quite there. He also equips the Shadows of the Empire (+2 to Strength), the Vanguard (+3 to Strength), and the Earth's Portable Bulwark (+1 to Strength), which finally suffices to put him at 38 Strength. He then dons the Executioner's Helm. Everybody then returns to their usual equipment.

And again, for those of you with the Witch's Hunt DLC, and even better option for Wynne's robe may be the Vestments of the Reaper (+9 Willpower, +6 Magic, +10 armor, +12% spell resistance).

Now it's time for me to participate in a Crime Wave.
