CRIME WAVE

Dwarven Rebels

My next priority is to complete a series of quests given out by Slim Couldry. But first, I travel to the Brecilian Outskirts. I get ambushed by several Dwarven Rebels along the way. Leliana immediately summons a Great Bear. Other than that, the Rebels are spread out enough that I can deal with the odd melee Dwarf in physical combat, and then have Leliana and Wynne use missile fire while the rest of the party runs down anybody who's at a distance.

Slim Couldry

My purpose in making a trip to the Dalish Camp is to make a shopping trip to Varathorn's. Varathorn, after the completion of three treaty quests, will have a more extensive inventory. He sells unlimited Elfroots, Deep Mushrooms, and Deathroots. He also sells various poisons, potions, bows, arrows, and leather armors. His more notable items include:

I then return to Denerim. A man named Slim Couldry now appears near Goldanna's house. He offers side quests involving stealing and sneaking, but will not appear unless and until the Grey Warden has at least one skill rank in Stealing or one talent in the Stealth tree. While only Rogues can learn the Stealth tree of talents, anybody can acquire at least one rank in skills like Stealing or Traps. This was the reason I stopped off to buy a few things from Varathorn, including the Tome of Skill and Sundry.

Slim's quests are in two groups, one involving thefts and the other involving stealth. However, I gain access to both by choosing the dialogue option of "I want to learn it all." This dialogue choice results in Slim Couldry being willing to offer all of his available quests to me.

A Lady in Waiting

I start off with the first stealing of a mark quest. I pay Slim 50 silver to get the first quest, which is pretty simple. A woman in a green dress will now appear in the Market square. I simply have Leliana pickpocket the Pouch of Gems from her, which I can sell for a gold sovereign.

A Stolen Blade

I pay Slim 1gp for the next lead. The job is to steal an Ornamental Sword from Ser Nancine, who will now be in the Wonders of Thedas shop. Either a good enough Persuasion check or a good enough Pickpocket check will suffice to get the sword off of her. The sword itself can be sold for 2gp.

Market Day

I give Slim 6gp for info on the next job, which is to pilfer Master Tilver's key so that I can loot his chests. Master Tilver can be found near the Mage's Collective contact. The problem is, his Guards will always try to prevent me from getting close enough to him. One way to deal with the problem is to have a character with both Pickpocket and Stealth go into Stealth, sneak past the Guards, and then pickpocket Master Tilver for his Silversmith's Key. Another way is to use a Persuasion check on the Guards to convince them to leave. I show the third way, which is to pay the Messenger boy who is just a little east of the Guards to create a distraction for them. This allows Leliana to walk right up to Master Tilver and pickpocket his key.

The two chests are at the south end of the Market square. They contain some gold, some Diamonds, some Emeralds, some Garnets, a Silver Chalice, an Engraved Silver Bowl, and Coarse Cut Gauntlets (+2% melee critical chance). For any of you low on Garnets for the Untraceable quest, this may be the perfect opportunity to make up the difference.

The Traitor's Crown

I pay 6gp for the next job, which is to steal Teyrn Loghain's Crown from his Seneschal. The Seneschal and his Guards are on the west side of the Gnawed Noble Tavern. The Guards will go hostile. As far I can tell, there's only one way to avoid a fight with the Guards and killing the Seneschal, which is to Intimidate the Guards into leaving. The Seneschal can then be convinced to hand over the Crown willingly. The next closest that you can get is to have a character with Stealth and Stealing sneak up to the Seneschal and pickpocket the Crown. Even so, a fight will start once the Stealth ends. Trying to pay the waitresses to give drinks to the Guards, or trying to give the Guards drinks spiked with Sleeping Poison through the waitresses, or trying to have the waitresses keep the Guards entertained will still all lead to a fight as soon as I get too close to the Seneschal, at least in my experience. I went with the last option for amusement's sake, and I don't mind as I get xp for killing the Guards as well. The Crown will sell for 12gp.

The Absent Mistress

Now I start the Stealth line of quests. Slim wants 1gp for info on the first one. The job is to loot the chest of Lady Sophie, who is away on vacation. The chest itself is in a room in the northeast corner of the Gnawed Noble Tavern. Sophie's Guard stands at the start of the hallway leading to the room, but she's so bored that she'll make no effort to stop the party. Leliana simply walks in and uses her lockpicking skills to open the door and the chest. The chest will have a Silk Carpet, a Deep Mushroom, and 2gp.

A Fistful of Silver

I pay Slim 3gp for info on the next job. The job is to kill Howe's Thugs and loot the Warehouse for its Silver Bars. The Warehouse itself is in the small alleyway on the south side of the Market District, just west of the Wonders of Thedas. Once inside, it's a matter of killing off the Thugs. Wynne catches quite a few incoming Guards on the right-hand side with a Fireball-based Grease Fire. It is otherwise pretty easy beyond that. Leliana loots all of the chests, including the ones with Silver Bars in the northeast corner of the Warehouse. I then sell off my loot for a tidy profit.

The Private Collection

Slim wants 10gp for the next job, which is to raid the treasure vault in Bann Fanderel's estate. The Estate appears on the Denerim map. Once there, I loot a room to the left. A hallway to the right leads to the treasure vault. Only once I'm there, many of Howe's Soldiers set up position behind me as a trap.

The first fight will be in the first room out the vault. There will be a few Soldiers to the left, and many more past the next door. Aldarion rushes the ones to the left and hits them with a Cone of Cold. Everybody else besides Wynne goes after the Archer on the left first to prevent him from getting off a Scattershot. Wynne, meanwhile, plants a Glyph of Repulsion right at the door. She then follows up with Earthquake, and then an Inferno-based Grease Fire. By the time the Soldiers make it through the crowd-control, the rest of the party has finished off the Soldiers on the left so they can pick up right where they left off. A lot of the Soldiers have gone 'aggro' on Wynne, but she is now able to protect herself with another Glyph of Repulsion right at her own feet.

The next fight is further up the hallway. The Soldiers, and a couple of Mages, are at either side of the end of the hallway. Aldarion gets in a preemptive strike with Tempest. Wynne sets up her crowd-control zone, and then sets up another Inferno-based Grease Fire. One Soldier and one Mage on the right survived, but Aldarion zaps the Mage instantly with Mana Clash.

I return to Slim Couldry, who's apologetic and returns the 10gp to me.

Now it's time to begin the rescue of the queen at the Arl of Denerim's Estate.
