ARL OF DENERIM ESTATE

Estate Exterior

I include Sten in my party this time, partly to show what's he's capable, but also because I don't want Alistair to get imprisoned in Fort Drakon down the road. I travel to the Arl of Denerim's Estate on the Denerim map. I soon meet up with Erlina, and she guides me to the left side. I get attacked by some Guards as I make my way along the west edge. I win the fight casually after Wynne leads off right away with an Inferno-based Grease Fire. There's no need to worry as these guards won't raise the alarm.

I round out the north side and then east sides of the Estate exterior, grabbing the odd item along the way. Once I get close to the door on the east side, I fall in Erlina's request to disguise my party as Estate guards. I could fight my way through all of them if I wanted to, but it's more beneficial to sneak through the first level of the Estate building in disguise. By this I mean that there's a 1,250xp bonus for sneaking through the first level of the Estate building (but not the dungeon in the lower level) while in disguise, which outstrips any xp I might earn by killing all of the guards on the first level. I let Erlina handle the rest once I put my disguise on. Note also that there's a chest with a random item just east of the front gate to the Estate, behind a barricade, which I loot before actually entering the Estate building.

Queen Anora Imprisoned

Here I simply do the rounds, looking for Codex entries to click on and containers to loot. Almost every room can be entered into without sounding off the alarm. I eventually make my way to a door on the north side, with Anora locked in behind the door. The door is magically sealed, so I'll have to find the Mage who cast the spell to free Anora.

Howe's Shield

Now I travel through the hallway going east. I check out most of the rooms for random items and books that can be clicked for xp and Codex entries. There is one door that needs to be avoided if I want to collect the xp for making it to the Dungeon without raising the alarm. The door is the one on the left at 0:50 of the video.

The next door leads to the treasure room. There will be plenty of gold and random items to score here. The two notable items are:

As far as defense rating goes, Howe's Shield is second to none. But frankly I dislike the Willpower penalty. Whether it's an Arcane Warrior or a shield-using Warrior tank, either style places a premium on having a large mana pool available for both sustained and activated talents.

Riordan

Now I go through the north door, leading to a room in the northeast corner of the Estate building. A book on a table provides 50xp and a Codex entry for Antiva. A chest on the west side of the room has Grey Warden documents, which I'll need if I want to access a certain vault.

I continue through the west door, where a Guard has his neck snapped by somebody in the cell behind him. An Orlesian Grey Warden named Riordan then frees himself. I can ask nearly all of the available questions as long as I postpone "Where can I find Howe?" to being the last question. Riordan then makes good his escape from the Estate.

The entrance to the Dungeon is close by, just across from Riordan's cell.
