Astral Prison

Aawill and Taggett

I then jump through to the Astral Prison, and fight a group of Bounty Hunters led by Aawill. Standard methods suffice here. Jaheira aims an Insect Plague at Aawill, and because he comes forward, the Insect Plague spreads to the Yuan-ti spellcasters as well. Keldorn uses True Seeing to prevent the Thieves from going invisible, and to remove invisibility for the Yuan-ti spellcasters as well. Imoen chips in with Chain Lightning. At some point she uses Breach on the Yuan-ti Mage to the left, allowing Minsc to kill him. After this it pretty much becomes a beat down.

A Gnome slave named Tagget explains that I need to find and destroy an Orb of Mastery to free the rest of the Thralls, and then defeat the Warden of the Prison in order to escape.

There's plenty of loot to be had here, including a couple Leather Armors +1, a Small Shield +1, a Bracers of A.C. 8, the Pixie Prick (+3 Dagger, target must save vs. death at +6 bonus or be put to sleep), and another pair of Boots of Speed. Keldorn will be wearing these for the rest of the game. I prize mobility for the entire party, but in Keldorn's case it augments his role as a Mage killer as he can quickly run down Mages who start off at a distance.

Master of Thralls

Now the party makes its way along the walkway leading east. A Mage Thrall shows up, and Keldorn hits her with Dispel Magic. The Mage tries to run, so I have to be careful not to give chase too far. At some point I pull myself short and shoot her down with missile weapons.

In front of me is a pit that leads to monsters. On the other side of the pit will be several more Thralls, including at least a couple of Yuan-ti Mages. I need to be careful in this situation, because it can be easy to have the party split apart with some of them facing the Thralls and others facing the monsters in the pit. So I decide to wipe out the Thralls first. Minsc scouts out their location while avoiding the pit. He then regroups with the party. Anomen sends a Storm of Vengeance, and then a Fire Storm, onto the other side. Keldorn also sends a Dispel Magic across to make sure they don't have any protections against the damage. Most of them roast under the barrage. The odd one that makes it across is easily cut down.

I then have Anomen cast Chaotic Commands on Avastrian. Avastrian casts Mirror Images and then descends into the pit. He's faced with several Githyanki, but he's protected against their psionic powers by the Chaotic Commands. He weakens the Githyanki with Sunfire and then Fireball. Jaheira then jumps in to give a helping hand.

Now that the pit has been taken care of, I have the rest of the party get across one at a time while avoiding the pit. The party kills the Female Thrall, who leaves behind Kundane (+2 Shortsword, +1 attack per round) and the Gauntlets of Weapon Skill (+1 THAC0). I don't have much use for Kundane, but Minsc wears the Gauntlets. I continue northwards and kill the Wyvern.

I then continue northwest and kill the Master of Thralls and his two Air Elementals. My saving throws are very good now, so his silence and paralysis powers aren't very effective. The Master of Thralls leaves behind the Staff of Air +2 (Summon 8 hit dice Air Elemental with limited charges, sleep cloud with limited charges) and the Mastery Orb. I'll need the latter item to render the Warden vulnerable.

I conclude the video by having Avastrian buff himself up and descend down the pit to the left. It has several Wolfweres, and a Greater Wolfwere in it. Minsc casts Armor of Faith on himself, and then jumps in as well. They kill off the regular Wolfweres first. Minsc then kills the Greater Wolfwere instantly with his Silver Sword.

The Warden

Now the party heads back to the middle of the walkway on the south side of the prison. In the middle of the walkway is a fiery brazier. First, I buff up, including Remove Fear, Mirror Images, Armors of Faith, Haste. Note how I show a workaround for the Ring of Free Action precluding Haste. Anomen takes off the Ring briefly, and then puts it back on after Haste. I then click twice on the brazier to destroy the Mastery Orb.

Now all the pits won't result in me dropping down anymore. I rush towards the northwest corner. The Warden and several Thralls, including Yuan-ti Mages, will attack me. I had Anomen start his Storm of Vengeance beforehand. Once the casting is almost finished, Avastrian heads forward to start the fight. Keldorn uses Dispel Magic at a distance to bring down their protections. Anomen attempts to add in a Fire Storm (but is interrupted), while Imoen also adds a Horrid Wilting. Jaheira throws in Insect Plague for good measure. This suffices to blow away most of the Thralls or bring them very close. The Warden comes forward, but Keldorn's True Seeing and Imoen's Breach suffice to make it vulnerable. The Warden leaves behind the Wave Shaft, a key, and Adjatha's Drinker (+2 Longsword, each hit adds 1 hit point to wielder).

I use the key to free the Sigil Troupe. Everybody in the party gets 44,000xp. The party and Haer'Dalis then return to the Five Flagons Inn.

I then head over to the Adventurer's Mart. I purchase the Fortress Shield +3 (+7 vs. missile weapons) and the Reflection Shield +1 (Physical Mirror effect on wearer) for Jaheira. The Fortress Shield will be Jaheira' shield for the rest of Shadows of Amn. The Reflection Shield is used only for certain fights where enemy missile fire is an especially dangerous and relevant factor. One more thing, I have Imoen buy two Potions of Master Thievery from Ribald. She uses them, as well as the other Potion of Master Thievery I found in the first dungeon of the game, to raise her Pickpocket skills. She then steals a Ring of Regeneration (regenerate 1 hit point each second) from Ribald. This is necessary because a very high Pickpocket skill is needed to steal from Ribald. The Ring of will become part of another Ring of Preservation.

I then have Cromwell put together the Shaft and the Blade into the Wave Halberd +4 (15% chance of +15 cold damage, instantly kills Fire Elementals and Efreeti). Minsc (and later Sarevok) will occasionally use this against fire-based creatures.

My next destination is the Umar Hills.
