WINDSPEAR HILLS

Moneylenders

But first I return to the Keep, where a couple of Moneylenders attempt to defraud me after they got a hold of the De'Arnise Seal. I earn 15,500xp by ordering their execution and paying a 1,000gp to cover debts owed by the locals to other merchants.

Scrolls of Protection

Now I go around shopping for the following:

These scrolls can be found amongst the Temples in the Temple District, and the merchants in Waukeen's Promenade. The reason for this is that I'll soon be faced with Dragons and other monsters who can inflict elemental damage of various sorts to a devastating degree. The reason for the Scroll of Protection from Petrification is that it's an ingredient for the Ring of Elemental Mastery under the Item Upgrade mod.

I also buy a few others things as well. One is another pair of Boots of Grounding (+50% electrical resistance) for Minsc, which will ultimately become part of the Stormlord's Heels under the Item Upgrade mod. Another one is another Girdle of Bluntness (+4 armor class vs. blunt weapons), which will ultimately become part of the Girdle of Glory under the Item Upgrade mod.

I also buy two Scrolls of Protection from Magic from Ribald. These scrolls, in conjunction with Vhailor's Helm, allow for some pretty nifty (or cheesy) tactics whereby even very powerful magic users can be rendered helpless.

It was necessary to do this shopping, not least because I will soon have a confrontation with a powerful Red Dragon.

Lord Jieran Firkraag

Here is where I enter the Copper Coronet and speak to Lord Jierdan Firkraag in order to reveal the Windspear Hills on the map and get that quest started.

Knights of the Order

Now I head through the City Gate, and towards the Windspear Hills. Except I get interrupted by a random fight that includes several Orogs, a Cleric, and a Mage. Imoen shows the advantage of her Robe of Vecna by being able to get Chaos off almost instantly. She then wins the fight almost by herself with a Horrid Wilting.

Once I arrive, I get attacked by what at first appearances are several monsters. I blow them away with spells and swords, but it turns out that they were actually Knights of the Order covered in illusions. Somebody named Garren Windspear comes by to offer his hospitality, and I end up at the entrance to his house near the southwest corner of the area.

Garren Windspear

Now I enter the house. Events proceed so that Garren's daughter, Iltha, is kidnapped while he is away. I kill off the bandits rather easily with standard methods. Garren returns, and I promise to save his daughter.

One of the bandits has rather fortuitously dropped a Spell Trigger scroll. The only set place to get a Spell Trigger scroll is at a store that won't be available until Throne of Bhaal. Beyond that, getting one depends on lucking out through an unlikely monster drop. And no, I didn't reload until I got it. I lucked out here. But since I did, I may as well take advantage of it and have Imoen scribe it.

Imoen usually has a different Spell Trigger in mind, but for now I have her set up the anti-Dragon Spell Trigger that consists of: Spell Breach, Lower Resistance, and Breach. This serves the dual purpose of both bringing down a Dragon's spell protections and lowering its magic resistance.

Werewolves and Gnolls

Now I travel towards the north. I eventually run into several Fighters who easily slaughter a bunch of Gnolls. After sitting through their rather amusing conversation, the Fighters turn into Werewolves and attack me. Putting up some buffs with quick casting times (e.g. Defensive Harmony, Mirror Images, Armor of Faith) and then engaging them in straight physical combat is enough to win the fight.

Vaelasa

The party now travels towards the southeast corner. They find a fairy ring, with a Dryad Queen named Vaelasa standing in its middle. Avastrian gives her the Dryad Acorns obtained in the first dungeon of the game. I get a 32,500xp bonus and then a 9,750xp bonus for doing this.

*Evil* Of course, Asteroth had killed the three Dryads in Irenicus' Dungeon much earlier, so he's forced to fight Vaelasa and a bunch of forest animals as well. It's not a difficult fight though.

The entrance to the Windspear Hills Dungeon is towards the northeast corner.
