BACK ALLEY

Merchant Quarter

Weapon Smugglers

I didn't show it in the video, but I sold off my recovered traps and other spare loot to Pap. Now I speak to Captain Brelaina and Marshall Cormick in the Watch Headquarters at #8 on the Merchant Quarter map. I leave for the Docks District, and along the way watch a couple of cutscenes describing intrigues in Neverwinter.

Docks District

Wolf and the Thug

I start off at #16 towards the north and east of the Docks District map. I then head west, north a little, and then head east towards the northeast corner of the District. At around #15 I run into Wolf having it out with a Thug. I decide to help corroborate Wolf's ruse, who promptly thanks me and leaves.

I show the entrance to the Back Alley, which is at #17.

Wolf and the Gang

First, however, I want to tie up a loose end before going on to the Back Alley itself. I enter the Sunken Flagon and leave, which serves two purposes. One, I switch out Elanee for Neeshka. Neeshka will be able to score some extra loot for me during the next few quests.

Second, entering and leaving the Flagon after my previous two encounters with Wolf results in Wolf and his crew of street kids imposing themselves on the Sunken Flagon as free residents. That in turn sets the stage to resolve the next part of Neeshka's personal quest.

Message from Leldon

I enter the Flagon again, whereupon Wolf informs me that he has a message for me from Leldon. Leldon wants to meet me and Neeshka in 'the Park', and Neeshka has to be there too. I get trasported there after selecting Khelgar and Elanee to come along as well.

Leldon is clearly spoiling for a fight. I make sure to take out his two Guards for the xp before ever touching Leldon himself. He uses a smoke bomb to flee once he's taken enough damage. I get a 400xp quest bonus, which I wouldn't have gotten had I previously tripped any of the noise traps in Leldon's Hideout.

Now it is time to enter the Back Alley. I go with a configuration of Valeria, Khelgar, Neeshka and Qara.

Back Alley

City Watch on the Take

I start off at #1 on the Back Alley map. Just a little ahead are some Watch members who've been bribed by a Thug. I could use a Diplomacy or Intimidation check to get the Watch to back down, but why not just kill them for the xp?

City Watch and Thugs

I spend the early parts of the video battling my way through gangs of Thugs. One thing to keep in mind is that they have the Evasion ability and thus stand a pretty good chance of avoiding damage from Qara's offensive spells. The battles themselves become a matter of Qara hitting enough of them with a well-placed Fireball whenever she gets the chance, and the other three flanking and taking out any that come up close.

At #2 will be a large group of both Thugs and corrupt City Watch soldiers. Valeria buffs herself up to the max in anticipation of this battle. I decide on a straight up fight to up my influence with both Khelgar and Qara, as well as for the xp. Qara gets in a first blow with a Fireball, and follows up for two more Fireballs as they're incoming. The other three then have a fairly easy time in taking out any survivors.

Rival Gang

I go on ahead to #3. There will be members of a gang rival to Moire's that have set up at a barricade. I could talk them into leaving, but I may as well kill them for the xp. They start off quite close to the party, but Qara still manages to catch them with a Fireball before they close in. It soon becomes a mop up. The Gang Leader leaves behind a Shortsword +1, which Khelgar holds onto for Shandra when she joins me in Act II.

Yet another benefit to killing them is that the enemy Mage leaves behind the Lesser Amulet of the Master (Disable Device +2, Lore +2, Open Lock +2, Diplomacy +2, Search +2, spell resistance 12). My long-term goal is for Valeria to wear Shandra's Pendant and take it into Mask of the Betrayer, but that is a long way off. The Lesser Amulet of the Master will in the meantime make for a great interim amulet for Valeria as it adds bonuses to many of the skills that she uses.

A barrel just a little to the right will have some random loot plus a Bowl of Commanding Water Elementals (10 charges of Summon Water Elemental). There will also be a few more Thugs to kill further along the Alley.

Weapon Wagon

The barrel at #4 will have more random loot.

Now I go on ahead to #5 and fight several Thugs and corrupt City Watch soldiers. I hold the party back with a 'stand your ground' command and let Qara hit them coming in with a Fireball. Most of the Soldiers are killed outright, but the Thugs are still incoming so Qara tosses in another carefully placed Fireball for good measure. Valeria, Khelgar and Neeshka go to work and it soon becomes a mop up.

Once it is all said and done, Neeshka wants to loot the wagon. I let her, which gains +1 influence with her but results in -1 influence with Khelgar. I don't mind, as I will soon make it up to Khelgar. The benefit is that Neeshka finds a weapon called Namarra (+1 rapier, 75% chance of Daze on target DC=14), which I'll just sell.

I haul the wagon out, and find myself back in the City Watch headquarters.

My next destination is the Warehouse.
