FIHELIS' ESTATE

Merchant Quarter

An Informant Uncovered

The evil side of course is a job for Axle and Moire to assassinate Fihelis before he can talk to the Watch. It also won't come up until after I've finished the Waterdeep Emissary quest. As I step up to the door, 2 City Watch men accost me. A substantial Diplomacy check is needed to get past them. I fail it and end up killing them. They each drop a City Watch Cloak. Note that this can be used to get you past the Watch guards on the first level of the house, but it won't get you any further come the second level.

Fihelis Estate, Level 1

The Vault

Keep in mind that having the lead character wear a City Watch cloak only lessens the chances of the City Watch Guards catching on to you as assassins. It does not completely immunize you from getting found out. And indeed, lingering around a guard for too long tends to tip off the guard that you're up to no good.

It's not a big deal for at least a couple of reasons. One is there's no chance at all of sneaking past the guards on the second level. Secondly, you can take out the guards that do catch onto to you before other guards join and go hostile as well, as long as you kill them off quickly enough. That is indeed what I do to start off the video.

The rest of the video shows me quickly making my way towards #2. Behind the door to the left of #2 is a Watch Guard (at #6) that is in possession of a Vault Key. I had Eagle's Splendour and Grobnar's Inspire Competence active beforehand. I make a point of rushing to him, speaking to him while he's still neutral, and then making a Bluff check to obtain the key. Killing him won't get me the key.

I can now open the door that leads to #7. The floor at #7 is itself trapped, as are a couple of the chests. The available loot is worth at least 1,000+gp.

Fihelis' Estate, Level 1

Now I dispense with pretences and clear the City Watch Guard out of the first level of Fihelis' Estate. The City Watch guard are no slouches either, like the Thugs if you've joined the Watch, and have their sheer numbers going for them. While the Thugs might score greater damage on an individual backstab, the Watch guards have better armor class, higher strength, and score more consistent damage over the long haul. On the other hand, none of them have the Evasion ability unlike the Thugs. And again, Neeshka always looks for sneak attack opportunities. I otherwise have Elanee and Grobnar keep the party members buffed up to the max, so the fights pretty much take care of themselves.

Fihelis Estate, Level 2

Fihelis' Estate, Level 2

I start off at #1 on the Level 2 map. There's a City Watch Sergeant just a little east past the door. It doesn't matter what I may try. He'll recognize that I'm not one of his men, and all the Watch on this level will become hostile.

It's pretty much more of the same after that. Note how there are a LOT of Thugs in the two rooms towards the southwest corner. I make a point of briefly entering both rooms in 'follow me' mode to get their attention, with the intention to bring them together in one large mass. The idea then becomes that Zarathos and Elanee can paste them repeatedly with thier lightning-based spells while they're tightly clustered together. Even more to the point, Zarathos' War Glory aura combined with Grobnar's Curse Song work together to drastically reduce my enemies' saving throws. The result is that the offensive spells inflict a lot of damage.

*Evil* Fihelis

Once I do reach Fihelis, Zarathos sees an opportunity to turn a profit. He uses his Intimidate skill to score both 1000gp and some gems. The gems will be at the base of a rock near a statue just as the party heads south from Fihelis' house. Axle will believe you've killed Fihelis, so there won't be any in-game consequence for this. Indeed, it will be more profitable than simply killing Fihelis.

My next quest will involve a ship called the Sea Ghost.
